Yuma Territorial Prison hopes to claim top spot in USA TODAY 10Best contest
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Territorial Prison is hoping to move from second place to the top spot in the USA TODAY 10Best contest. The historic site is known for its rich history, and some stories that are a little more chilling.
The Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park said it is the most haunted destination in America.
Last year, the Yuma Territorial Prison finished second in the USA TODAY 10Best contest. This year, staff are hoping visitors will help push it into first place.
The prison opened in 1876 and operated until 1909. Today, it’s known not only for its history, but also for reports of paranormal activity.
Visitors and staff have reported flickering lights, cells locking on their own, furniture being rearranged, and even encounters with the spirit of a young girl said to pinch guests.
“We are the most haunted tourist destination. The prison was opened in 1876 and it was here until 1909, and throughout there was so much history here and a lot of unique, scary stuff that has happened. So, in that time, there was something that may have left a presence here,” said Ace Crye, assistant manager at the Yuma Territorial Prison.
Crye said being crowned the most haunted destination would make a huge impact.
“When you get that recognition, it brings more tourism to Yuma, and we need tourism in Yuma. Yuma is such a historical town and we want more people to come learn about it. For us, as a historical site, we are the most visited site, so it means a lot to us to not only talk about the history but also what might be here,” Crye said.
