Work continues on utility/infrastructure project on North Stone Avenue in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) —  A two-block street closure on Tuesday marked the latest phase of an ongoing construction project on Stone Avenue, north of Fillmore Street.

The closure between Fillmore and Fourth Street is scheduled to remain in place until a week before Thanksgiving, as crews build a new stormwater pipe there.

The city’s Stormwater Enterprise (SE) and Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) are teaming up to make several improvements on the northern mile of Stone, between Fillmore and Winters Drive — behind the Birdsall power plant and the former dog racing track.

If the construction was in more of a residential or commercial area, it would be far more impactful than being in the industrial area that it is; crews have generally kept one lane of traffic open southbound on Stone during the project.

Despite limited access for driversat times, officials say the project remains on schedule for completion early next year.

As the sixth month of this project approaches, SE ansd CSU have specific objectives.

The first step is for the utility to finish replacing an old iron water main with p-v-c pipe; it will stretch two-thirds of a mile between Fillmore and Nichols Boulevard.

Crews are currently on the north end of the project area connecting local service lines to the new water main segment; that work should end just before Thanksgiving.

CSU is also replacing old fire hydrants along Stone.

The responsibility of SE is to make stormwater upgrades along Stone — specifically, north of the McDonald’s at the Fillmore intersection, which has no drainage infrastructure.

Crews have started building a new underground stormwater pipe.

Owners of the 17 businesses along Stone are glad to see stormwater improvements, saying that previous flooding damaged their parking lots and the street, and occasionally backed up into their businesses.

Much of the construction is now at the south end of the project, but the street remains closed to all except business access and construction vehicles.

The construction mostly affects Planet Granite, a countertop business that occupies several buildings along the west side of Stone, north of Fillmore.

However, an employee there says that crews have been a big help by keeping one lane of traffic open southbound during much of the project.
