YUBA CITY, California (KCRA) — A wanted Colusa County man was arrested after he fell through the ceiling from the attic of an empty house in Yuba City during a standoff, according to police.

The Yuba City Police Department said a search warrant was served at a home in the 1200 block of Payne Court. Officers were searching for 42-year-old Raymundo Mesa of Arbuckle, who was believed to be in possession of firearms, police said.

When a SWAT team arrived, Mesa left the residence out the back, jumped multiple fences and entered a nearby vacant home, according to police.

Over several hours, the SWAT team repeatedly made announcements ordering Mesa to surrender. Law enforcement used diversionary devices, chemical agents and a K-9 unit, but Mesa remained inside the home.

He was hiding in the attic of the home until he fell from the ceiling, which ended the standoff. Officers then took Mesa into custody.

Police said Mesa was wanted for more than six months on an outstanding felony arrest warrant out of Colusa County. He was wanted on charges involving the possession of multiple firearms, including a machine gun and a suppressor.

Police said Mesa had evaded officers in previous arrest attempts by fleeing both in vehicles and on foot.

During the search of the empty home, police said officers found a loaded handgun and a cell phone that had been discarded inside.

Mesa was taken to the hospital for minor injuries before he was booked into Sutter County Jail on the following charges: being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, resisting or obstructing officers and an outstanding felony arrest warrant.

His original warrant carried a bail of $50,000, but Mesa is now being held without bail after a bail enhancement was approved by a judge following his arrest.
