DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — The Iowaska Church of Healing in Des Moines has been approved to use the psychedelic drug ayahuasca in its religious ceremonies under strict conditions.

The plant-based drug is typically brewed into a psychoactive tea and used in religious practices. The Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing approved an agreement with the church to allow its use.

Before the agreement takes effect, the church must undergo a board investigation.

The church will also be placed on one year of probation and required to report any adverse effects requiring off-site medical care.
