Deschutes Public Library Board to Appoint Chantal as Interim Director
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Deschutes Public Library Board has appointed Chantal Strobel as interim library director while continuing its search for a permanent director. Strobel will serve in the position for one year following the retirement of Director Todd Dunkelberg.
Strobel has worked at Deschutes Public Library for 32 years, most recently serving as assistant director of community engagement since 2023.
Strobel worked closely with Dunkelberg for the last 16 years. In the weeks leading up to Dunkelberg’s departure, the two will spend time completing the handoff of leadership responsibilities for the library district.
During her tenure as interim director, Strobel’s primary goals will be overseeing the continuing opening of the new central library and keeping the renovation of the downtown library on track.
Strobel, interim library director, reflected on her long history with the district as she prepares for the transition. “I’ve been able to be a part of many different opportunities and helping to set the vision that got us to this point. And so it’s been a wonderful journey. And I’m really excited to have this next year to kind of, continue this journey and to keep everything moving forward,” Strobel said.
Dunkelberg will officially retire on Aug. 28, 2026. The library board will continue its efforts toward hiring a permanent director while Strobel leads the district over the coming year.
