Longtime road & drainage issues east of Interstate 25 & Air Force Academy end with recent overnight paving work

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — It was the summer of 2024 when KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior learned of complaints about potholes, crumbling pavement, and poor drainage at the intersection of North Gate Boulevard and Struthers Road.

Struthers is in El Paso County’s jurisdiction, and North Gate formerly was until it was annexed into the city.

That summer was when the new Ford Amphitheater opened nearby.

Drivers said that officials had promised infrastructure improvements for years, but upgrades scheduled to start in 2021 were delayed by several projects — the reloacation of utility lines for the new Hotel Polaris at thew Air Force Academy’ north gate, and unspecified engineering work by the city.

Then, after that work was completed, the county had to start and finish a drainage project; construction began a year ago and finished this spring.

On an early March morning during construction, North Gate west of Struthers was in such bad condition that a dozen vehicles hit potholes that blew out tires and sejt hubcaps spinning; some of the damage happened during a Road Warrior live report that day.

Completion of the drainage work cleared the way for the city to repave nearly a mile of North Gate, from Struthers to Voyager Parkway; the county then repaved Struthers just above the North Gate intersection.

The North Gate paving was done during overnight hours last month.

Last fall, the city repaved the eastbound lanes of North Gate in front of the Mining Museum (Western Museum of Mining & Industry) to coincide with the redesign of the museum’s main entrance.

While in the area earlier this week, the Road Warrior received several thumbs-up, smiles, and car honks from satisfied drivers.
