MILWAUKEE (WISN) — A Milwaukee police sergeant fatally shot a driver Monday night after the driver displayed a firearm during an encounter near Highway 175, police said.

The sergeant was not wearing a body camera, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, who noted video of the incident exists from multiple sources, including witnesses.

The incident began around 8:15 p.m. near Highway 175 and Lloyd Street, when the sergeant saw a truck make a U-turn and travel south in a northbound lane, Norman said during a press briefing Monday night.

Police said the sergeant reported what he saw to dispatch and attempted to make contact with the driver. During the encounter, the driver displayed a gun, and the sergeant fired his duty weapon, striking him.

The driver died at the scene, and his firearm was recovered, police said.

Norman said the driver was outside the vehicle. It was not immediately clear whether the driver fired the gun or only displayed it.

The sergeant is a 37-year-old man with over 15 years of service. He will be placed on administrative duty, police said.

Police said video related to the incident will be released in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure 575.

The West Allis Police Department is the lead agency for the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team’s investigation.

Highway 175 near Vliet Street was shut down for several hours because of the investigation.
