Central Missouri Humane Society halts dog intake after positive case of parvovirus

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Central Missouri Humane Society announced in a Thursday press release that it is temporarily halting its dog intake after a case of parvovirus was confirmed at the shelter.

Parvo is a contagious virus that affects dogs, according to the release. Signs of parvo include lethardy, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. It cannot jump from dogs to humans.

CMHS will suspend the intake of dogs for the next two weeks, the release says.

““Any time we identify a contagious illness in the shelter, our first priority is protecting the animals already in our care and preventing additional exposure,” Executive Director Julie Aber was quoted in the release. “Temporarily suspending dog intake gives our team the opportunity to contain the situation, closely monitor the dogs in our care and take the necessary precautions before bringing additional dogs into the shelter. We know this creates challenges for our community, and we are asking everyone to help us during these next two weeks.”

Community member who find stray dogs are being asked to “make every reasonable effort to reunite them with their families in the field rather than immediately bringing them to the shelter,” the release says.

CMHS will still be available to scan found dogs’ microchips.

Fly or drive? What Labor Day travel could cost from the Coachella Valley

Raymond Kalra

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — With Labor Day weekend approaching, travelers across the Coachella Valley are weighing not just where they want to go, but how much they are willing to spend to get there.

For some, higher gas prices are not enough to cancel a trip altogether. Reuben Sanchez said he is still planning to travel for his daughter’s birthday, even if it means paying more at the pump.

“A little bit, but it’s for my daughter’s birthday, so, you know, I’m going to do what I have to do and dish out the cash.”

Others said the rising cost of travel is changing how often, and how far, they are willing to go.

Some travelers may choose the road even when gas prices are high. For solo travelers, driving can still save hundreds of dollars. For families or groups splitting the cost of a vehicle, the difference can be even greater.

Flying, however, can still appeal to travelers looking to save time and avoid spending hours on the road.

AAA spokesperson Candice Redd said many people are still planning to take road trips despite higher gas prices.

“Even with higher gas prices, people are still planning to take a road trip. That’s simply because it’s cheaper than, let’s say, flying.”

AAA also expects heavy holiday traffic, especially Thursday and Friday between noon and 8 p.m.

CHP Public Information Officer David Torres said travelers should plan around peak travel times when possible.

“If you want to avoid the traffic, make sure you drive outside the peak hours. Try leaving maybe on Saturday instead of Friday…”

CHP is also urging drivers to give themselves extra time, check road conditions before leaving and never drive impaired.

For many travelers this Labor Day weekend, higher prices may not be enough to cancel the trip — but they could have a major impact on whether that trip starts at the airport or behind the wheel.

Sara Solorzano runs for Imperial City Council

Jessamyn Dodd

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA) – Sara Solorzano, who works in Rep. Raul Ruiz’s (D-Calif.) Imperial Valley office, is running for Imperial City Council this November.

Rep. Ruiz has publicly endorsed Solorzano.

One of the biggest topics of the year is a proposed data center in the city of Imperial. Solorzano has attended several Board of Supervisors meetings, town halls, and City Council meetings, tracking the progress and lawsuits attached to the project.

“In regards to the data center, I am for growth and for development, and diversifying our revenue for the city,” she told News 11 in an interview.

“Except that we need to prioritize, and I will be committed to prioritizing the environment and the health and safety of our residents,” she said.

“That comes first over any project or any investment is the health and safety and the environmental impacts,” she assured.

Solorzano said public safety, especially when it comes to first responders, is a priority for her as a former Emergency Medical Technician.

“I’m committed to public safety and continuing to strengthen that. I know it’s key to have the resources and the equipment you need available at your hands,” she explained.

With recent crime among teenagers in the City of Imperial, Solorzano said she wants to work with other city council members to come up with crime prevention solutions to keep children and teens on the right path.

“I know how important it is for youth in the communities to have resources and recreational activities and opportunities,” Solorzano stated.

The project is designed to give Downtown Somerton a new look, with upgrades aimed at making the area more vibrant and walkable.
