Las Cruces Police Department launches Flock camera transparency portal

Max Zepeda

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) — Amid public worries about privacy, the Las Cruces Police Department posted a video explaining how it uses Flock automatic license plate readers (ALPRs). Tuesday, LCPD said it introduced a Flock Camera Transparency Portal that posts updated information on the technology.

According to the police department, LCPD retains data from Flock for 30 days before it’s automatically removed.

The transparency portal teaches users how LCPD uses Flock cameras to “capture objective evidence without compromising on privacy.” Users can access data and usage summaries, the number of ALPRs in Las Cruces, the number of searches and the number of “hotlist hits.”

Additionally, the portal includes information on what Flock cameras detect, LCPD’s use policy and what counts as prohibited use of the technology.

The portal said the cameras detect license plates and vehicles. It doesn’t detect faces, people, gender or race, according to the portal.

LCPD said hotlists include automatic alerts of vehicles entered into the National Crime Information Center and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The portal and social media video released the same day the El Paso City Council unanimously voted to direct the city manager to ensure the removal of all Flock ALPRs and to direct city leaders to refrain from entering new contracts with Flock Safety unless directed by the council.

“My hope is that whatever conclusion you reach, you reach it based on what the technology actually does, how we use it, and the facts not on misinformation, assumptions, or things that simply aren’t true,” LCPD Chief Jeremy Story said in the social media video.

DNR awards $2.86 million to Bunceton for wastewater improvements

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Bunceton will receive $2.86 million in financial assistance from the Department of Natural Resources to upgrade its wastewater treatment system, a Tuesday press release from the DNR says.

Funding from the DNR includes a $1.1 million loan and a $1.7 million grant through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, the release says. The city is also getting a $449,287 Community Development Block Grant.

The DNR wrote that it expects the funding to save the city in $1.7 million in principal and $540,00 in interest during the loan’s 20-year term.

“While we often take it for granted, adequate drinking water and wastewater infrastructure is critical to the quality of life of every Missourian and the sustainability of communities and industries throughout the state,” DNR Director Jake Buxton was quoted in the release.

The release says the city expects the project to be completed by November 2027.

Palm Desert ‘Scaminar’ to help seniors spot increasingly sophisticated scams

Peter Daut

PALM DESERT, CA (KESQ) – Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, using increasingly convincing tactics to target victims, and experts say artificial intelligence is making it even harder to tell what’s real and what’s a scam.

The issue is especially concerning for aging and senior populations, including communities across the Coachella Valley.

To help residents recognize warning signs and protect themselves, an upcoming “Scaminar” in Palm Desert will focus on some of the most common scam patterns being seen today and offer practical steps people can take to avoid becoming victims.

According to the IRS, financial crimes targeting seniors continue to be a growing concern, with more than $2 billion in reported losses last year, an eightfold increase since 2020.

Leeann Flores, a senior vice president with Bank of America, said fraud can affect people from all walks of life and often happens before victims realize they are being targeted.

“Fraud is on the rise, and innocent people lose their hard-earned money every day because of these scams,” Flores said. “While our bankers are trained to spot these scams, unfortunately by the time we see it, it is too late. And we really want to help people get ahead of it before it’s too late.”

The Palm Desert “Scaminar” will cover scam trends and techniques designed to make fraudulent calls, messages and other forms of communication appear legitimate.

Organizers say the goal is to give residents the information they need to recognize red flags, slow down when something feels suspicious and take steps to protect their finances and personal information.

The event will be held September 25 at the Bank of America Palm Desert branch.

The “Scaminar” is free and open to the public.

Beaumont city treasurer charged with perjury, identity theft, and forgery

Jesus Reyes

BEAUMONT, Calif. (KESQ) – The elected City Treasurer of Beaumont has been charged with multiple offenses following a public corruption investigation, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.

Anup Giresh “AJ” Patel, 39, was charged with providing false information on Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) return forms regarding a motel he operated in the city, and subsequently stealing another individual’s identity to communicate with the city and make false claims regarding the TOT he owed, resulting in six felony counts:

• Count 1: Penal Code section 118(a), Perjury, on or about April 5, 2021• Count 2: Penal Code section 118(a), Perjury, on or about August 19, 2022• Count 3: Penal Code section 118(a), Perjury, on or about March 13, 2024• Count 4: Penal Code section 530.5(a), Identity Theft, on or about May 6, 2025, through May 30, 2025• Count 5: Penal Code section 470(d), Forgery, on or about May 6, 2025• Count 6: Penal Code section 529(a)(3), False Personation, on or about May 30, 2025

According to the DA’s office, an investigation by its Public Integrity Unit revealed that Patel submitted multiple Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) return forms to the City of Beaumont, signed under penalty of perjury, that stated he received $0 in gross rent for occupancy of rooms from April 2020 through December 2023 in a motel he operated in the City.

In January 2025, the city initiated an audit on all motels/hotels from January 2021 through December 2023. The audit showed Mr. Patel’s motel collected $1,667,300.68 in gross rent from January 2021 through December 2023. Mr. Patel, as owner of the motel, owed the city $166,730.07 in TOT plus additional penalties for the timeframe.

Additionally, Patel stole another individual’s identity and used it to create a fraudulent lease agreement and communicate with the city of Beaumont regarding the Transient Occupancy Tax owed to the city.

If convicted on all counts, Patel faces a maximum of six years, four months in state prison.

Patel posted bail in the amount of $30,000 and is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on October 26, 2026.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Natasha Sorace of the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit.

Rexburg Chamber hosts free festival to connect locals and students

Kaelyn Blessinger

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) – The community is invited to Porter Park for Experience Rexburg this Saturday, Sept. 19. The event is free and will be from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.

“The idea is we have a lot of our merchants and things that are introducing their services to the students so that they know what’s here,” Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill said. “And then a lot of the local people come, just because it’s a great time to be able to bring people together. And that’s the whole idea.”

This is an annual celebration hosted by the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce, their goal is to reconnect everyone, from long-time residents to BYU-Idaho students returning to campus, to the local businesses in Rexburg.

“We want to help support our local businesses, and we want to help promote them and help them obviously get more business,” Alyssa Müller, the Member Services Coordinator of the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce, said. “Especially because a huge demographic here in Rexburg is the BYU students. And so we want them to know what Rexburg has for them.”

Along with the local businesses there will be food trucks, raffles, and various activities, like a rock wall, for the whole family to check out.

The goal is to bring the college communities together with the local population.

“Back in the day, we used when we had intercollegiate sports at Ricks College,” Mayor Merrill explained. “That’s kind of what brought the community together was the football games and the basketball games and things like that. And when that went away, it almost seemed like we had sort of two separate communities. And one of my goals when I first became mayor was to try to bring the communities together a little bit more.”

Alyssa reflects that being an out of state student could be difficult, so learning all about Rexburg’s offerings could be a great support.

“I was out of state when I came to school. So 100% we want all the new freshmen because we definitely want to show them that they have access to so much here.”

Katy Station, Broadway Diner locations ‘under contract’

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The president of Maher Real Estate confirmed to ABC 17 News on Tuesday that the Katy Station building and the location of Broadway Diner are under contract in an active transaction.

Company President Jack Maher III confirmed the contract.

Katy Station, located at 402 E. Broadway, was added to the Columbia Historic Register on Jan. 29, 1979. The building originally served as a depot for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad.

Shiloh Bar and Grill currently resides in that location, and owner Nic Parks confirmed earlier this month the bar will close in December. Parks said earlier this month the closure is tied to the landlord’s plans to sell the property and alluded to a potential buyer’s plans to redevelop the historic Katy Station building.

A petition has started in an effort to save the Katy Station building from demolition
