WAUKEE, Iowa (KCCI) — The Iowa Nepalese Association held a candlelight vigil at Centennial Park on Sunday night to honor victims of the devastating floods in Nepal.
The association said most Nepalese families in Iowa live in the Des Moines metro area. Organizers explained that the vigil was a way to stand in solidarity with those affected by the disaster.
“Iowa may seem very far, but as you can see, like there are a lot of Nepalese population here, so it’s close to this disaster that happened,” said Aabriti Pandey, public relations director of the Iowa Nepalese Association.
“They have a huge community, and we don’t even know if someone’s family or friends is affected by the flood,” said Pradip Sthapit, president of the association.
The association is collecting donations for those in need through Sept. 15. The money will go to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund of Nepal.
