Abundant Church gives away 1,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to El Paso students

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — The Abundant Church, which has three campuses across West, East, and Downtown El Paso, hosted their annual “Back to School: Backpack Giveaway” for the upcoming school year.

The church gave away nearly 1,500 new backpacks filled with school supplies including pencils, notebooks, folders, etc. to families in the community.

According to the church, this event is “one of the many ways Abundant Church serves the El Paso community, in hopes of providing students in need with essential school supplies to help them start the new school year prepared and confident.”

However, the giveaway was not exclusive to members of the congregation alone, as attendees simply needed to be at this Sunday’s services to receive a voucher to claim a free backpack for their child, who also needed to be present.

“With Back to School, there’s a great need, you know,” Jared Nieman, Abundant Lead Pastor told ABC 7. “And kids need backpacks. They need supplies. That supply list doesn’t change, and it’s pretty big.”

Boone County Sheriff’s Office warns residents after AI swatting call

A scam that makes people believe their loved ones are in danger using artificial intelligence has hit Boone County, and the sheriff’s office is warning people after a resident reported a call.

According to a Facebook post, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the victim received a call Friday that showed their daughter’s contact name and number. The caller allegedly had the daughter’s voice and told the victim she had been kidnapped at gunpoint before another voice demanded money, essentially asking for a ransom.

“It was later determined the person they were speaking with was not the daughter but rather an AI generated voice that sounded like their daughter,” the post says.

A coordinated law enforcement response found the real daughter in Jefferson City, unaware of the scam.

The office said this is the first time a scam like this has happened in the county. People are urged to use caution should they encounter a similar situation.

“If you receive such a call, try to verify the loved one’s identity through questions to which only they would know the answer(s) or try to contact the person through other means, such as calling them from another phone,” the post says.

BCSO Captain Brian Leer said that this is the first time the department has encountered a call using AI voice impersonation.

Adding that scammers will often play on the emotions of people they are trying to scam.

“Scammers so often play on the emotions; they play on the emotions of people through fear, or you know panning. That’s the sad reality of these situations,” he said.

Leer said this type of scenario is not common in Boone County.

“Very rarely do we see a true what we call a swatting incident where they call in and say that something’s happening at a specific address or that a specific crime is in progress.

Adding that this call generated a large law enforcement response and attempted to extort someone.

“This did both. They generated a large response for a law enforcement agency trying to, you know, basically scare everybody and get everybody on edge, and then they try to extort and scam people,” he said.

When it comes to the investigation, Leer said these cases are difficult to solve.

“They are not able to be tracked back really well. They know that if they route things back through other countries and back into the United States, a lot of times it’s impossible to come back and pinpoint who it was,” he said.

Additionally, Leer believes that these types of scenarios will become more common as technology advances.

“Our detectives were already aware of this happening, and certainly in some jurisdictions, but this is the first time it’s happened locally. You know, as they were looking at it and researching it yesterday, they were able to find several other common scams, swatting incidents that were out there,” he said.

The Better Business Bureau suggests people have a safe word that they keep private to use in case an emergency happens. If a caller doesn’t use the safe word, then hang up and call the person directly.

People should also report any similar calls to local law enforcement. A suspect hasn’t been identified or arrested, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

The FBI reported Americans lost over $893 million to AI scams in 2025, and Missourians lost $233 million in total to all scams, including AI.

University of Missouri pulls dining hall lettuce over cyclospora risk

The University of Missouri has pulled its dining hall lettuce for possible contamination with Cyclospora, the parasite causing thousands of cases of diarrhea across the United States.

MU spokesperson Travis Zimpfer told ABC 17 in an email Saturday that there was a recall for the Cross Valley Farms-branded lettuce served at the university.

The brand is owned by US Foods, one of the largest food service distributors in the country. The company announced that a “limited number” of products from its Cross Valley Farms brand, including iceberg lettuce, were affected by the recall and began reaching out to customers on Friday.

“Campus Dining Services immediately followed standard recall protocol,” Zimpfer wrote in an email.

The recall is tied to a national Cyclosporiasis outbreak that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked to the supplier, Taylor Farms. The multi-state parasite outbreak came from lettuce grown in central Mexico, according to the CDC, and was distributed to 27 states, including Missouri.

Wreckage of sunken boat near Alcatraz located as search continues for 2 missing passengers

    SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — The wreckage of a boat that capsized near Alcatraz Island earlier this week, leaving two people still missing, has been located on the floor of San Francisco Bay, officials announced Friday.

The San Francisco Police Department said its marine unit found the submerged 49-foot Volare using boat-mounted sonar in the area where it sank Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators are now using a remotely operated vehicle to assess the wreckage while officials determine whether it is safe and feasible to recover the boat.

“The SFPD is working diligently with partner agencies and evaluating recovery options to determine whether it is safe and feasible to recover the wreckage of the Volare,” the department said.

The Stockton, California-based cabin cruiser capsized around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday about 600 feet west of Alcatraz Island while carrying 20 people. Crews rescued 16 people from the water. One passenger, 78-year-old Clifford Boisa, died after being brought ashore. A dog aboard the Volare was also found dead.

Members of the Boisa family and friends were on a memorial boat trip around the bay to scatter the ashes of a relative who died in 2016, family members said.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday evening for three missing passengers. On Thursday, San Francisco police said marine unit officers recovered the body of 58-year-old Tondra Miller of Sacramento County, also known as Tondra Madruga. Her body was spotted in the water west of Treasure Island within the search area. Miller was a friend of the Boisa family and had joined the memorial trip.

Two passengers remain missing and presumed dead: Jackie Boisa, Clifford Boisa’s wife, and Carol Boisa, his sister.

“SFPD will continue its investigation into the cause of the sinking vessel while continuing the recovery efforts of the remaining missing individuals,” the police department said.

Wildfire smoke triggers statewide air quality alert in Michigan for Sunday

    DETROIT (WWJ) — The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has issued a statewide air quality alert for Sunday due to wildfire smoke forecast to move through the state.

The alert is in effect Saturday for the Upper Peninsula and the northern half of the Lower Peninsula due to smoke and will expand statewide on Sunday.

A cold front moved through Southeast Michigan on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a brief improvement in air quality in the area, but cooler, drier air behind the system is pulling wildfire smoke with it.

Air quality on Sunday will range from unhealthy for sensitive groups across the Lower Peninsula to unhealthy in the Upper Peninsula, according to the National Weather Service.

CBS News Detroit has declared Sunday a NEXT Weather Alert Day due to the expected poor air quality. Similar conditions could warrant the designation Monday.

High temperatures in Southeast Michigan will be in the 70s and 80s on Sunday.

Federal officials recommend that people keep windows closed overnight to keep smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with filters that have a minimum efficiency reporting value of 13 or higher.

Dr. Abeer Berry, a cardiologist at Huron Valley Hospital, says anyone with preexisting health conditions has to be especially careful around air pollution.

“If you have an underlying heart disease, you’re being exposed to air pollution, which increases inflammation both in your lungs and heart. So, it puts you at higher risk for having a heart attack or stroke, accelerates plaque buildup in your arteries and it also increases your heart rate and blood pressure. And those play a big role in whether or not you’re creating a perfect environment for a cardiovascular event,” Berry said.

Metro Detroit had the worst air quality in the world early Thursday, resulting in numerous disruptions to community events and programs, including outdoor events.

Man arrested after shots fired in Columbia, one person injured

A 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries early Sunday morning after shots were fired at a Columbia apartment complex.

According to a press release from the Columbia Police Department, 22-year-old Columbia man Lorenzo Toledo was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

CPD Lieutenant Derek Moore told an ABC 17 News reporter on scene Sunday that officers responded to a shots-fired call near the intersection of Old 63 South and East Broadway around 2 a.m.

Law enforcement found the man with head injuries that were not life-threatening, Moore said. He couldn’t confirm if the victim was shot.

Toledo was taken into custody shortly afterward, Moore said. A Boone County Sheriff’s deputy located his vehicle near McKee Street and Orchard Lane.

An ABC 17 News reporter arrived on scene around 3 a.m. and saw the Columbia Police Department’s crime scene investigations van and three cruisers. Officers were seen taking pictures of a sedan in the parking lot of the Cliffside Manor Apartments that appeared to have one busted window behind the driver’s side.

The scene cleared around 3:30 a.m.

Prominent women’s boxer Hannah Rapp killed in Texas after deputies say suspect reversed vehicle, hitting her

    BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas (KTVT) — The boxing community is in mourning after a prominent competitor was reportedly hit and killed by a driver in Texas over the weekend.

The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 10 a.m. on Saturday to the 23000 block of FM 159, near the community of Navasota. Deputies arrived and found 26-year-old Hannah Rapp lying on the roadway, with initial reports indicating a vehicle had hit her. First responders provided emergency care prior to transporting her to a nearby hospital. Rapp, however, died of her injuries.

During the investigation, Brazos County deputies said they learned Rapp and another bicyclist were on the road when 31-year-old Charles Medina drove past them. However, the sheriff’s office said Medina then stopped his vehicle, shifted into reverse, and hit Rapp. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Brazos County is located about 80 miles northwest of Houston.

ESPN notes that Rapp was a rising star in the ring, having challenged for the World Boxing Council’s featherweight championship this past June. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman mourned Rapp’s death in a statement shared online.

“The loss of Hannah Rapp leaves us heartbroken. She was an exceptional boxer, but above all, an invaluable member of our boxing family. We join in the grief of her loved ones, her team, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and supporting her throughout her brilliant career,” the statement reads.

The World Boxing Association also shared a tribute to Rapp on X.

CBS affiliate KBTX-TV in College Station notes that Rapp moved to the area in 2024 from her native Indiana. She had been boxing for less than five years and balanced training with her job at Texas A&M.

Boston Starbucks shut down after video shows rats eating food there

    BOSTON (WBZ) — The Starbucks at South Station in Boston has been shut down after a video showed rats eating the food in the display case. The video taken around 10 p.m. Wednesday also shows the rodents climbing on the cash register.

The Boston Inspectional Services Department (ISD) sent over an employee to inspect the location after receiving the video. The Starbucks manager told the inspector that an employee had mistakenly left the food out overnight and they had since thrown it all away.

Rat droppings were also found throughout the stand, including in a cabinet. Fruit flies were seen in the display case as well. The location had “multiple violations of the Massachusetts Sanitary Code and FDA Food Code,” according to the ISD.

The Starbucks was ordered to close due to the “immediate health hazard.” Its food permit was also temporarily suspended until another inspection can be completed and passed. The manager was told to retrain their staff on how to close properly, and the owner of the Starbucks location was instructed to hire a pest control company to address the “rodent infestation.” The location will also need to be cleaned, sanitized, and disinfected.

“Our South Station location is temporarily closed while we address a pest issue. We will not reopen until we are confident that the store meets our high standards of cleanliness and safety. We look forward to welcoming our customers back soon,” a spokesperson for Starbucks told WBZ-TV in a statement.

“While this is a location operated by a third party, we expect all of our locations to provide the customer experience that Starbucks has come to be known for. We’ve been in touch with the licensee and understand that the location will be closed for a short period while they address the issue.”

“It was pretty disturbing,” said commuter Clothilde Donarumo, who was sent the video by a friend. “I’m definitely concerned. I don’t get food here in the mornings, but now I am definitely not going to for a while until I hear an update because that did not look good on that TikTok at all.”

“They don’t realize the medical repercussions,” said commuter Jacqui Russo.

A database from the City of Boston showing all past health inspections had no other violations listed for the location, except for an issue with a check in January 2025. The Starbucks was most recently inspected in December 2025 and passed.

Starbucks closed more than a dozen stores in Massachusetts last year, including the iconic “Golden Teapot” location. The company said the closings were due to “underperforming stores” across the country.
