Bubba’s 33 hosts ‘Raise from the Roof’ event in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Bubba’s 33 brought the Yuma community together for its “Raise from the Roof” fundraiser, an event designed to support injured Veterans.

The goal was to raise $5,000 while raising awareness for those who have sacrificed in service to our country.

As part of the event, David Lopez, the restaurant’s manager, climbed onto the roof and remained there until the goal was reached.

Despite the extreme summer temperatures, he stayed on the roof for several hours.

“The purpose is to make awareness and raise money, to cover as much as possible the bills of injured Veterans,” Lopez shared.

Throughout the day, several members of the community even climbed onto the roof to stand alongside Lopez.

Lane closures scheduled for North Providence Road next week

Lane closures are scheduled to occur next week on North Providence Road as city brews work to repair damaged concrete, a Thursday press release from the city says.

Work will occur near the intersection with Armadillo Drive. It is scheduled to begin 7 a.m. Monday and wrap up by 4 p.m. Thursday.

The work area is marked with “bump” signs and the road will stay open as crews work, the release says.

Bingham County Coroner Jimmy Roberts announces resignation

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (KIFI)—Bingham County Coroner Jimmy Roberts has submitted his resignation and will step down from the office on Sept. 20, according to an announcement from the Bingham County Republican Central Committee.

Roberts’ departure creates a vacancy just a few months before the end of his current term. Roberts was defeated in the May Republican Primary by Scott O. Tweedy, who won the race by a wide margin. He’s expected to assume the office in January because no Democratic candidate filed for the position.

Under Idaho law, the central committee is responsible for submitting three names qualified to fill the position. The Bingham County Commissioners will then choose one of the three nominees to serve until the term expires in January.

The Republican Central Committee is currently accepting letters of interest and résumés from qualified candidates through Aug. 14. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, be U.S. citizens and have lived in Bingham County for at least one year preceding the appointment.

Individuals interested in being considered as an interim coroner should submit a letter of interest and resume no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. Send your resume to Chairman Mark Bair at markbair@gmail.com.

The central committee will meet on August 19, 2026, to review applicants and nominate the three individuals.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, be a citizen of the United States, and have been a resident of Bingham County for at least one year.

Model charged in burglaries throughout LA County also accused of festival-related thefts in Indio

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – A 29-year-old woman arrested earlier this year for a series of dating app burglaries in Los Angeles County has been taken into custody again on suspicion of thefts in Indio, police announced.

Adva Lavie, also known as Mia Ventura, is accused in two separate grand theft investigations that occurred on April 12, 2025, at the same Airbnb rental located in the 43000 block of Spiaggia Place in Indio during the Coachella Music and Arts Festival.

Police said both incidents involved separate victims who reported valuable personal property stolen after spending time with the suspect, whom they had met through social connections.

Police said the victim had invited Lavie, going by the Mia Venura alias, to go to the festival with him. She spent the night at the Airbnb with the man and his roommate. The victim told police Lavie got upset due to not getting a festival wristband.

In the first case, the victim reported that approximately $25,000 worth of property, including a Rolex watch, had been stolen after Ladvie shared a room with the victim at the Airbnb. Investigators suspected the property was taken while the victim was away from the room.

In the second case, a separate victim reported the theft of a silver Rolex valued at approximately $8,600, silver and black Louis Vuitton aviator sunglasses valued at approximately $700, and a black Louis Vuitton card holder valued at approximately $1,800. During the investigation, detectives obtained interior home surveillance footage that allegedly captured the suspect removing the second victim’s property from his unlocked Tesla Cybertruck.

At the time, the case was submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office but was declined for filing due to insufficient evidence, police said; however, as the investigation developed, a felony warrant was issued for Lavie’s arrest.

Lavie was arrested earlier this year after being accused of using dating apps to meet men and then burglarize their homes from 2023 to 2025 throughout Los Angeles County, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said she was targeting older men, posing as a romantic companion on virtual dating platforms and social media.

She was on the run from October 2025 to March 2026, before being located and detained. Lavie was eventually charged with six felony counts, including first-degree residential burglary.

According to reports, she had been released from custody with an electronic ankle monitor after being arraigned but was arrested again for the Riverside County charges on Tuesday. The Beverly Hills Police Department noted that she was also in Lavie is also in violation of a court order.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Lavie was charged for the Indio case on April, but she did not show up at her scheduled arraignment on May 20. The judge issued an arrest warrant with bail set at $20,000.

The DA’s office said another court date has not been set yet for an arraignment.

Authorities said Lavie’s charges in LA County are separate from the Indio Police Department’s investigation and should not be conflated with the Riverside County case.

Bothwell staff train with pediatric specialists in midst of peak summer trauma season

Doctors and nurses at Bothwell Regional Health Center spent Wednesday preparing for pediatric emergencies through hands-on simulations led by specialists from Children’s Mercy and University of Missouri Health Care.

The eight-hour training focused on helping emergency department staff recognize and respond to pediatric trauma through realistic scenarios and procedures.

Emergency Department Director Mike Shipp said the timing is intentional because pediatric trauma cases typically increase during the summer months.

“In the summertime people are outside, they’re doing sports activities, recreational activities. And unfortunately, that’s when a lot of these traumas happen,” Shipp said. “Kids are involved in a lot of these activities. So that’s why this is an opportune time to have this training.”

Hospital emergency room visits have been trending upward since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Missouri saw a slight dip in visits per 1,000 population in 2024 after peaking in 2023.

Children’s Mercy partnered with MU Health Care to bring pediatric emergency specialists to Sedalia. Jill Nusbaum with Children’s Mercy said the training helps equip providers in rural communities that may not have immediate access to pediatric specialists.

“Rural communities frequently don’t have pediatric specialists,” Nusbaum said. “So being able to equip people out in rural communities with the knowledge and resources and the connections through collaborations like this, that they can get answers that they need in a timely fashion is really important.”

Throughout the day, providers worked through mock pediatric trauma cases using lifelike simulation mannequins, giving them an opportunity to practice procedures and communication before facing a real emergency.

Registered nurse Keirsten Lorenc said the realistic simulations helped build her confidence.

“I’m definitely more confident now that I know what the doctors are more looking for,” Lorenc said. “You can actually see it on a mannequin and know what to kind of practice on and what to do.”

Bothwell officials said they hope to continue offering similar training opportunities to help emergency providers stay prepared to care for children in critical situations.

Yellowstone Film Festival moves to October, extends submission deadline

CODY, Wyo. (KIFI) — The Yellowstone Film Festival has rescheduled its 2026 event for Oct. 9 through Oct. 11 and extended its film submission deadline through Sept. 18.

The festival was originally scheduled for August but was postponed following the recent death of founder Jacob Graham, a lifelong Cody resident, filmmaker, actor and musician.

Organizers said the additional time will allow Graham’s family, friends and the Cody community to honor his memory while continuing the festival in a way that reflects his vision.

“We sincerely appreciate the understanding and support of our filmmakers, partners, sponsors and community,” Festival President Brett Straniere said. “By moving the festival to October, we can honor Jake’s legacy while continuing the celebration of independent filmmaking that meant so much to him.”

In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, organizers said all films screened at the 2026 festival will be created by U.S.-based filmmakers.

“Outstanding filmmakers are creating remarkable work throughout Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, yet many do not have enough opportunities to present their films to audiences,” Straniere said. “The Yellowstone Film Festival was created to provide that opportunity while celebrating the creativity and stories of the American West.”

$6,440 raised to help Yuma students attend school with confidence

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Association of Realtors’ Community Outreach Committee said they raised $6,440.

In a press release, the money was raised to benefit School House Outfitters, which is a program “dedicated to providing economically disadvantaged students with the clothing, shoes, school supplies, books, and hygiene essentials they need to begin the school year with confidence.”

The funds were raised during the Association’s Nomination Luncheon this month, where it featured a Brokerage Challenge, which encourages brokerages to sponsor a child, a Heads & Tails fundraising game, and additional member donations.

“This incredible generosity is a reflection of what makes Yuma such a special community,” said Maria Ramirez, President of School House Outfitters. “Every dollar raised helps provide a child with the essentials they need to walk into school feeling prepared, valued, and confident. We are deeply grateful to the Yuma Association of REALTORS® and every member who chose to invest in the future of our local students.”

JCPD closes investigation into car found in Binder Lake

The Jefferson City Police Department says the investigation into a vehicle found in Binder Lake earlier this month has been closed.

Lt. Curtis Finke with JCPD said the vehicle was a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with license plates that expired in 1997.

“It was submerged in the water for quite some time, at least over 10 years,” Finke said. “We did our follow-up investigation, and it did not turn up any active criminal investigations. We have followed up with the owner of the vehicle, and we have since closed our case of additional information.”

Finke said no charges will be filed.

“It’s really just treated as a property crime that we investigated,” Finke said. “It all kind of dead-ended with no active criminal investigation, nothing that’s going to require any further follow-up or assistance, even by the owner that requested, any further from us.”

ABC 17 News has requested documents related to the investigation.

Palm Desert senior says email phishing scam faked his death, hacked contacts

PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) – An 80-year-old Palm Desert resident wants to warn others about an email scam sent to his family and friends claiming he died.

John Fanning says the phishing scam sent an email to all his contacts in the form of a funeral invitation, but when users clicked a link to register for a ‘celebration of life,’ it compromised their computer.

“I had a neighbor come to the door in the afternoon and well, I opened the door and he was quite surprised. He says, oh ho, John, he was going to pay condolences to my wife with my passing,” Fanning said.

Fanning says he was first victimized by the scam when he received an email from a friend in Los Angeles claiming her father died. He believes when he clicked the link, the scam stole his information and enacted a similar scheme on him.

“We received an email from a friend, and the celebration of life was the lead in. Knowing that she had an older father that we know in his late 90s, I thought maybe he had passed away. You had to click on a green tab, and then there was another little block where you would check it to validate that you’re not a robot. I guess that caused this scam or whatever with their program to lock in to my email and get all of my emails,” he said.

Now, Fanning wants to warn others after it installed a virus on his computer, collected his contacts and he worries, may have compromised sensitive information.

Matt Disher at Southwest networks in Palm Desert says the ‘supply chain’ scam is common.

“One thing to be careful of when attacks like this happen is it may not just be his email that they got into. He could have got under the his files and pictures and bank accounts and everything else once they got access to that computer,” Disher said.

He says the scam can act as a trojan horse to access others information through you.

“A lot of people always say, ‘I’m not important. Nobody would want my data.’ You could be right, but they might want somebody’s data that you know or that you know of someone that knows them,” he said.

Disher also says these scams are only getting more advanced due to artificial intelligence.

As for Fanning, he says he’s consulted tech experts to clear his devices of any malware.

Desert Recreation District opens several new cooling centers to help residents beat the heat

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ)– The Desert Recreation District is opening more cooling centers to help you escape the heat.

The cooling centers are open through October 15th at the Palm Desert Community Center, Mecca Community Center, North Shore Beach and Yacht Club, and the Jerry Rummonds Community Center in Thermal. The district says demand for these centers continues to grow in the extreme summer heat.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, sometimes your AC’s not working good or you have some issues. You just need a break and that’s what the community centers are there for,” explained Scott Sear, Public Information Officer for Desert Recreation District

Palm Desert and North Shore are open Monday through Friday, with Palm Desert also open on Saturday. The locations in Mecca and Thermal will be open Monday through Thursday.
