Saturday has started off mostly dry, with overnight storms being the only precipitation so far, as more showers and storms slowly enter from the west. The outflow from this activity may inspire more storm chances later in the day, with a similar threat for gusty winds at most. Coverage is highly uncertain, but a washout is not expected, and there’s a good chance of dry time for evening firework displays. Monitor the forecast for updates.

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for the potential of dangerous heat through Saturday. All of this week will present a risk of dangerous heat. Heat indexes will largely range from 98-103 degrees.

Upper-level high pressure has developed, pushing the jet stream northward. A steady supply of Gulf moisture will keep our humidity high.

This strong high-pressure system looks to stick around across the southeast through the weekend keeping temperatures locked in the 90s. Gulf moisture will make the air feel very stagnant and thick with dew points in the 70s.

The combination of high dew points and high temperatures will yield heat indices between 100 and 105 degrees through Saturday. Daily heat indexes in the triple digits and overnight lows in the 70s will wear on anyone without access to effective air conditioning, especially those sensitive to heat-related illnesses.

Heat indexes near 100 will be dangerously hot for sensitive groups, including children and the elderly. Rain chances will return on Saturday and contribute to a cooler day for some, though uncertainty is somewhat high regarding Saturday’s precipitation chances.

If you’re traveling to Kansas City or St. Louis, you should expect it to feel hotter in each city throughout the week than in rural areas of Mid-Missouri. The expansive pavement and lack of green cover can create hotter environments, especially over time, as buildings and pavement hold heat overnight, leading to greater warmth during the day.

Try to limit your time outdoors during peak heating hours from late morning through dusk. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and stay hydrated with water or electrolyte drinks, especially if you work outdoors.

Make sure pets have cool shelter and plenty of water, and avoid taking them on longer walks during the hottest part of the day. Never leave children or pets unattended in hot vehicles and always check the back seat.

Garbage truck breaks loose while being towed, rolls into Dallas home, authorities say

    DALLAS, Texas (KTVT) — A garbage truck broke free while being towed Friday afternoon and rolled into a Dallas home, prompting a structural assessment and an investigation, officials said. The city sanitation truck was being hauled by a third‑party tow company when it detached around 2:20 p.m. in the 8500 block of Thunderbird Lane, according to Dallas police.

An elderly couple who live in the home was not injured, authorities said.

Investigators are evaluating the home for damage and continuing to look into how the separation occurred.

LA County deputies find drug lab with 800 pounds of meth during illegal dumping call

    PALMDALE, California (KCAL, KCBS) — Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies discovered a “clandestine methamphetamine conversion laboratory” in Palmdale during an illegal dumping call earlier this week, according to a news release from department officials.

In the release, deputies said that they were called to an area near 110th Street East and Avenue M-8 for an investigation regarding alleged illegal dumping. While on scene, they discovered the large-scale operation, which they said was used for the manufacturing and distribution of narcotics.

“During the investigation, personnel discovered more than 800 pounds of methamphetamine, prompting a broader investigation that ultimately uncovered a sophisticated methamphetamine manufacturing and distribution operation in the Antelope Valley,” the release said.

Deputies said that both liquid and crystal meth were seized from the location.

One person, 22-year-old Mexico resident Alejandro Hernandez Gutierrez, was arrested in connection with the discovery. He was booked for manufacturing of a controlled substance, deputies said.

“This investigation demonstrates how what initially appeared to be a routine call for service quickly evolved into the discovery of a sophisticated criminal enterprise capable of producing and distributing large quantities of methamphetamine,” said LASD Narcotics Bureau Captain Bobby Dean in a statement. “It also highlights the unpredictable and potentially life-threatening hazards law enforcement personnel encounter while protecting the public.”

As the investigation continues, deputies asked anyone with more information to contact the Narcotics Bureau at 562-946-7125.

California city’s first-ever Pride event moves indoors after pushback

    OAKDALE, California (KOVR) — Oakdale’s first Pride event is moving forward this weekend after organizers changed venues following pushback over its original location and a planned drag performance.

Some residents pushed back over the event’s original location at Dorada Park and a planned drag performance.

“I also understand staff has issued a permit for a so-called Pride event,” one speaker said during the latest City Council meeting.

Another speaker raised concerns about the event being advertised as open to all ages, including children, and having a drag queen host.

After the public pushback, organizers moved the event indoors to the Bianchi Center.

“It was a huge upgrade to be able to provide a more accessible space in the heart of Oakdale,” said Ryan Hall, president of CalPride.

Hall said the idea to bring Pride to the city did not come from outside Oakdale, it came from people living there.

“That’s my place as a mom of rainbow kids, absolutely,” said Elizabeth May, owner of Sisters Coffee.

May’s coffee shop hosts a monthly LGBTQ+ social.

“I had a young man walk in here and say, ‘We don’t have anywhere to have a social here for LGBTQ.’ I said, ‘Heck yes,'” May said.

Still, the backlash has left parents like May concerned.

“How does it feel? Scary. I’m excited, but as a mom of a kid in the community, I’m nervous for them,” May said.

May said the venue change helped ease some of the tension.

“The different venue made a win-win situation for everyone. I was very proud of the kids for making that hard decision,” May said.

For organizers, the drag performance is part of the celebration.

“Enjoy some line dancing, enjoy some live music, enjoy the drag show, and then also enjoy community members and our local businesses, our local artists and partner organizations,” Hall said.

Oakdale Pride is scheduled for Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry is free.

National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences inducts Jeff Martin into Silver Circle

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KEYT) The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Pacific Southwest Region, inducted Jeff Martin into the Silver Circle.

The Silver Circle is a prestigious honor roll that recognizes individuals who began their television careers at least 25 years ago and those who have contributed to their community and the NATAS PSW chapter.

Martin plays a central role in the Unity Telethon, Old Spanish Days,  public service announcements and more.

“It took a lot of people in my life to remind me, like Jeff this is a big deal, it is a really big deal, so it is finally sinking in, like wow, wow, and then when you look back at your video and your own history you’re like didn’t we just start doing this and here we are,” said Martin.”

Martin credits his mother for inspiring him to pursue his television career.

He grew up in Montana where he turned his childhood closet into a broadcast studio.

At 17 he told people at a TV station in Missoula that they needed to hire him and they did.

His next stop was an NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City.

For the past 42 years KEYT-TV has been his television home.

Kenny Loggins said he crossed paths with Jeff in 1986 when the Loggins created the Unity Telethon.

“Back then Jeff was just a skinny kid pushing buttons in a production truck, now he produces the whole live TV event, and we have worked together on many live performances over the years, along with my friend Mike McDonald, Olivia Newton-John, Clint Black, Brad Paisley, Jeff Bridges, Rob Lowe, so many more,” said Loggins, “the thing that stands out the most for me is that, like myself, Jeff has a deep sense of care and commitment to the community in every project he touches.”

Martin was among six people honored at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines including two Gold Circle inductees who have made their mark in the industry for 50 years or more.

The Gold Circle inductees include Doug Friedman and Joe Smith.

The other Silver Circle inductees inductees include Luis “Pollo” Aceves, Scott Heath, and Steven Luke.

Former Silver Circle recipients Catherine Garcia emceed the event and former Silver Circle Kent Kay presented the awards along with NATAS PSW President D.J. Summit.

The recognition does not mean Jeff Martin is retiring, he is still going strong behind the scenes.

2 juveniles charged with arson and causing a catastrophe in massive fire

    ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania (KDKA) — Two juveniles are in custody and face multiple charges, including arson and causing a catastrophe, in connection with a massive fire that destroyed several properties Wednesday night in Allentown, Pennsylvania, officials say.

The fire broke out at an old furniture factory in the 300 block of North Front Street, forced nearby residents to evacuate and hundreds in the area without power.

The juveniles are being held in juvenile detention and are being charged with arson, causing a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, and conspiracy, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Authorities have not released the names or ages of the juveniles, but due to the circumstances of the offense, the charges will go through the juvenile system.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

12-year-old girl on scooter killed in Haverhill school bus collision

    HAVERHILL, Massachusetts (WBZ) — A 12-year-old girl has died after she collided with a school bus while riding on a motorized scooter with another child in Haverhill, Massachusetts, authorities say.

The collision happened Thursday at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Portland Street and 5th Avenue. Haverhill police had previously said that both children were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.

The girl who died attended Haverhill Public Schools. Her identity has not been released as family members are notified.

Footage from the scene showed a school bus surrounded by police caution tape, with a damaged black scooter on the ground. The road was closed to traffic while police investigated.

Massachusetts State Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are assisting Haverhill police in the investigation. Police have not said what may have caused the crash.

Haverhill schools Supt. Margaret Marotta said grief-counseling will be available at the middle school Friday and Monday. She also encouraged parents to talk to their children about scooter safety, saying they can pose “very real dangers,” especially to young operators.

“Many young people ride friends’ scooters or ride together, often without fully appreciating the risks involved,” she said. “These conversations could save a life.”

Haverhill is about 35 miles north of Boston near the New Hampshire border.

60,000 gallons of wastewater mistakenly dumped into Merrimack River; popular Massachusetts beaches closed

    NEWBURYPORT, Massachusetts (WBZ) — Plum Island beaches in Newburyport, Massachusetts are closed after 60,000 gallons of wastewater were accidentally dumped into the Merrimack River on Thursday.

The city of Haverhill said it’s alerting nearby communities and residents along the river that a contractor doing sewer separation work on Thursday morning “mistakenly discharged wastewater to the storm drainage system” on Garden Street over a four-hour period.

“As a precaution, residents and recreational users in Haverhill and downstream Merrimack River communities are advised to avoid contact with river water in the vicinity of the discharge and downstream areas for 48 hours,” the city said.

Plum Island Beach closed The Newburyport Health Department has closed all public access to Plum Island Beach. The closure is expected to last through at least Monday, depending on water quality tests.

Making contact with unsafe water can result in nausea and vomiting, respiratory symptoms, eye irritation and earaches.

Massachusetts beach closures There were about three dozen beach closures in Massachusetts on Friday. Most were due to unsafe levels of bacteria in the water, which is not unusual after heavy rain.

The other beaches closed Friday, according to the Interactive Beach Water Quality Dashboard, are:

Life sentence for 19-year-old convicted in murder of Maryland garden center owner

    DAVIDSONVILLE, Maryland (WJZ) — A 19-year-old man received a life sentence after he was convicted of killing the owner of a Maryland garden center in 2025, according to Anne Arundel County court officials.

Under a plea deal, Jonah Poole will have the possibility of parole. He was also ordered to forfeit money stolen from the murder victim, 67-year-old Stephen Koza, court officials said.

Maryland store owner killed Koza, who owned Tropic Bay Aquatic Garden Center in Davidsonville, was found dead on May 24, 2025, in a burned vehicle that was parked in the lot of his business.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames when police arrived, and investigators said they found Koza’s body tied up and burned inside the pickup truck.

Inside the business, police found a crime scene that indicated there had been a struggle. They later determined that Koza was attacked around closing time, tied up, and put in the back of the truck.

Second suspect arrested According to police, Kylee Dakes was also arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Poole and Dakes were a couple and were scheduled to graduate from Southern High School a few weeks after the murder took place.

Poole worked for Koza at Tropic Bay Aquatic Garden Center in 2024, detectives said.

Police claim Poole and Dakes drove Koza around in the back of the truck before returning to the store and setting the vehicle on fire.

Foresters drop second game in a row

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – It took 18 games but the Santa Barbara Foresters have dropped two games in a row.

The San Diego Waves scored three runs in the eighth inning and pulled out an 8-6 victory.

The Foresters had their 11-game win streak ended on Thursday by the San Luis Obispo Blues 3-1.

Santa Barara is 15-3 on the season and host the Menlo Park Legends on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara High School.
