Fire damages two homes in Desert Hot Springs, no injuries reported

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — Firefighters responded to a residential fire in Desert Hot Springs this afternoon that damaged two homes.

According to Riverside County Fire Department, officers received a 911 call at about 4:15 p.m. reporting multiple homes on fire in the 13000 block of West Street.

When crews arrived, they encountered high winds, which officials say contributed to the fire spreading to a second home. The second structure sustained light damage to its roof.

Firefighters contained the fire at 5:22 p.m. and the American Red Cross was requested to assist two adults and two children who have been displaced.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Columbia Downtown Safety Ambassadors Program gathering data for its first monthly report

The new Columbia Downtown Safety Ambassadors Program will soon publish a monthly incident report starting in mid-July that details incidents, along with statistics.

The District Executive Director Nickie Davis said the reports will be “extensive.”

The program has only been officially active for about a week and a half. The ambassadors have already de-escalated one situation, according to Davis.

“They helped de-escalate a bit of a larger fight that was happening down on Eighth or Seventh Street,” Davis said. “Our main goal is to keep those situations from becoming something that they would actually have to call the police for.”

The ambassadors are not law enforcement and can’t arrest anyone, but are there to prevent dangerous situations from happening.

Davis said that during training, before the official launch, an ambassador called 911 for an unresponsive person. The person was revived after EMS administered NARCAN and then taken to the hospital.

“They [the ambassador] got a reward for it already and just good work on their part for noticing and continuing to check on this person,” Davis said.

While patrolling, Davis said many people are happy to see the ambassadors, and some ask questions about city ordinances.

Five ambassadors walk in different zones around downtown Columbia from 4:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There’s also a full-time outreach coordinator.

One injured after aircraft crash near Santa Paula Airport

SANTA PAULA, Calif. (KEYT) – Several agencies, including the Ventura County Fire Department, helped a man from a plane crash at a river bottom near the Santa Paula Airport just before 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

The airplane fell near the river bottom and the injured sole passenger in the plane got himself out, according to the VCFD.

A helicopter airlifted the injured man to the Santa Paula Airport, where an ambulance then got him to a local hospital, according to the VCFD.

The man is now in stable condition with minor injuries from the crash. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office will continue the investigation.

Ventura Police arrest man for hatchet possession and robbery

VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) – Ventura Police arrested a man for robbery and hatchet possession just before 6:30 p.m. Friday near the Bus Depot.

The victim refused to give the robber his headphones and called the VPD after a 19-year-old in dark jeans, a black T-shirt, and a black beanie flashed what appeared to be a revolver at him.

The victim then gave up his headphones, and the robber walked away before being detained about 15 minutes later by VPD officers.

VPD officers identified the robber thanks to the victim and had a hatchet in his possession when VPD officers called him.

VPD officers then took the 19-year-old to the County Jail for charges of robbery and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.

Paso Robles Police arrest bank robbery suspect in Fresno

PASO ROBLES, Calif. (KEYT) – Paso Robles Police officers found the initial suspect in a June 26 bank robbery in Fresno around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

PRPD officers relayed information about the man and Fresno officials helped find and arrest him on suspicion of bank robbery and a post-release community supervision violation.

PRPD officers later took the man back into custody and booked him into the SLO County Jail for the aforementioned violations.

The case remains under investigation and those with information are asked to contact the PRPD.

UPDATE: Shelter in Place LIFTED in neighborhood near U.S. Olympic Paralympic Training Center

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – UPDATE: The shelter-in-place is lifted.

Colorado Springs Police say the shelter-in-place was activated because they believed a possible suspect in a shooting was seen in the area.

Police say the shooting happened on Sunset Road just after 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. Two people were shot and taken to the hospital. The police department describes their injuries as serious but non-life-threatening. The spot where the shooting happened is less than half a mile from where the shelter-in-place went into effect.

Just about an hour later, police say they received information that a potential suspect in that shooting was in the area of 300 Iowa Ave. That’s what led to the large police presence and shelter-in-place.

No arrests have been announced. Police have not said if that information was accurate.

ORIGINAL REPORT: The Colorado Springs Police Department has issued a shelter-in-place notice for people between N Union Blvd and Prairie Rd.

Fees waived for pet adoption fair at Palm Springs Animal Shelter

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — Assemblymember Greg Wallis partnered with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter to host community-driven event aiming at raising awareness about overcrowded animal shelters.

This one-day event features waived adoption fees, allowing residents to bring new family members home without the financial burden.

Prior to the event, Palm Springs Animal Shelter was operating at more than 200% capacity. Organizers hope residents will adopt pets to make room for other animals in need. This is exactly what happened.

When phones fail: Ham radio operators prepare for emergencies

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (KESQ) – Amateur radio operators from the Desert RATS gathered at the Cathedral City Library for ARRL Field Day, an event focused on emergency communications and disaster preparedness.

The annual exercise gives ham radio operators a chance to practice communicating without relying on cell service, internet or the power grid — skills organizers say can be critical during earthquakes, wildfires and other emergencies.

Organizers say ham radio operators can quickly relay messages between emergency responders, neighbors and families when traditional communication systems fail. They also stressed that preparedness starts before disaster strikes, encouraging residents to have an emergency kit and a plan in place.

Residents can also use the MyShake app for earthquake alerts, the Watch Duty app for wildfire updates, and find preparedness training through the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network.

Two seriously injured in Miller County crash

Two women were seriously injured in an early Saturday crash in Miller County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, a 21-year-old Jefferson City woman was driving a 2011 Ford Fiesta east on Highway 54 and went off the left side of the road around 2 a.m. The car flipped, crashing west of Storage Road.

The driver and passenger, a 20-year-old Union woman, were both taken to Lake Regional Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. The report says neither were wearing a seatbelt. The vehicle was totaled.

Boater seriously injured, arrested for crash at Lake of the Ozarks

A Camdenton man was seriously injured and arrested for a boat crash at the Lake of the Ozarks early Saturday morning.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the 28-year-old was driving a 2024 Flagship Pontoon north in the Lake of the Ozarks Main Channel when he hit a dock walkway at the 17.5 mile marker shortly before 1:30 a.m.

According to the crash report, the man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. An MSHP arrest report says Shawn O’Connor was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. on suspicion of boating while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, boating within 100 feet of a dock at greater than “No Wake” speed and operating a vessel in a reckless manner.

The man was taken to Lake Regional Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, the boating incident report says. He was not wearing a flotation device. The pontoon had extensive damage.
