EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — An El Paso family lost its Lower Valley home and pets after a house fire that led to an explosion. Now, they’re asking for the community’s help.

Valerie Holguin, her mother and brother lived in a trailer. The siblings were at a graduation party when their mother called.

“I thought that my mom was just joking around. But then when I tried to check the camera that we had outside, there was no connection. And that’s really weird, because we always have connection here,” Holguin said.

When she got home, firefighters told Holguin that wiring in her room caused the fire.

“Because the windows were all closed, that’s why the back of the trailer exploded,” Holguin said.

No people were hurt, but the only thing Holguin could think about was her pets’ wellbeing.

“We were just worried about our babies — our four cats and two dogs,” she said.

The El Paso Fire Department said they could only find the remains of two cats and one dog. However, Holguin’s family told ABC-7 they haven’t found their other three pets.

One dead, one flown to hospital after shooting in Osage County

A woman was flown to a hospital, and another person was found dead when Osage County deputies and state troopers responded to a shooting Friday morning.

A release posted on the Osage County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page says deputies and troopers were sent to a home on County Road 623 on a shooting call and found a woman with a single gunshot wound who was flown to a regional trauma hospital.

Another person was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the release states.

The sheriff’s office said names were being withheld Friday morning pending notification of next of kin, but investigators do not believe there is any threat to the public.

The sheriff’s office said more information would be released as the investigation progresses.

Woman killed in high-speed Pocatello crash

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) — The Pocatello Police Department and Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a woman early Friday morning.

Just after midnight on June 19, the Pocatello Police Department and Idaho State Police were called to a severe accident near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and East Cedar Street. Witnesses nearby told police they’d seen the woman speeding down the roadway, hitting two parked vehicles before her vehicle completely left the roadway.

First responders worked to extricate the driver from the wreckage. She was rushed by EMS to Portneuf Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries.

Juárez mayor requests leave of absence

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) — Ciudad Juárez Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar requested an indefinite leave of absence Wednesday afternoon, according to the city’s municipal government. The request concludes nearly five years of him leading the municipal administration.

During a special city council session, Pérez Cuéllar said the next step in his career is a challenge in promoting the transformation of the state of Chihuahua, but also seeking justice for Juárez, according to a news release.

He said the city faced shortcomings and insufficient budgets for years, and will continue working to make sure the city gets the treatment and resources it needs.

“When years have passed and I look back on this stage of my life, I will be able to say with peace of mind that I put all my effort, all my energy, and all my heart into moving Ciudad Juárez forward,” Pérez Cuéllar said.

During the special session, he thanked municipal government leaders, first responders, public service workers and other departments for facing challenges to serve Juárez.

“They are the ones who truly sustain and move this city forward every day,” he said.

Additionally, he said he’s certain City Secretary Héctor Rafael Ortiz Orpinel will lead the administration with responsibility.

“I leave with peace of mind because I know there is an extraordinary team working under extraordinary leadership,” Pérez Cuéllar said.

Pérez Cuéllar was elected as mayor in 2021 and 2024.

Mormon Crickets invade Fremont County

ISLAND PARK, Idaho (KIFI) – A growing Mormon cricket infestation that has already affected thousands of acres in Eastern Idaho is now crawling farther into northern Fremont County, raising concerns among residents and property owners.

According to local officials and residents, the large reddish-brown insects have spread north from the St. Anthony Sand Dunes area and are now being reported in portions of Island Park, including Antelope Flats and other areas farther north into the forest.

Recent social media posts have documented groups of Mormon crickets moving through the region. A chain of videos and photos shows the creepy crawlers are multiplying by the thousands from Ashton to Kilgore to the Fort Hall Reservation. One post from a local resident in Ashton went viral on ACCUWeather’s national Facebook page, prompting county officials to urge residents to report any infestations and seek assistance if needed.

Despite their name, Mormon crickets are not actually crickets. The flightless insects are known for traveling in large bands and can cause significant damage to vegetation, gardens, crops, and rangeland as they move across the landscape.

The “Mormon cricket” insects received their name following a historic infestation in Utah during the early days of Mormon settlement. According to pioneer accounts, flocks of seagulls helped save crops by feeding on insects during an event known as the “Miracle of the Gulls.”

Resources Fremont County locals can turn to at this time

Fremont County officials say resources are available to help landowners combat the infestation. County weed department employees are certified to apply bait treatments designed to control Mormon cricket populations on private property and along county roads. However, treatments cannot be applied to federal lands.

Earlier this year, Fremont County Commissioner Mark Chandler said the county has treatment products available and that the state would provide additional supplies for roadside applications where needed.

Officials are encouraging residents who notice large numbers of Mormon crickets on their property to contact the Fremont County Weed Department for assistance before the infestation spreads further.

Property owners seeking help can contact Fremont County Weed Department Supervisor Bryce Fowler at (208) 332-8856 or Fremont County officials for more information on available treatment options.

As warmer summer weather continues, county officials say monitoring and early intervention will be key to limiting the impact of Mormon crickets across Fremont County and Eastern Idaho.

Motorcyclist has life-threatening injuries after Jefferson City crash

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Cole County man suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash Thursday night on Highway 50.

The 57-year-old motorcyclist from Russellville was not wearing a helmet while driving on Highway 50 westbound, just west of the Tri-Level in Jefferson City, according to a Jefferson City Police Department news release.

The man lost control of his 2015 Honda Goldwing and was thrown from the bike, police say. He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Honda was towed from the scene.

The crash investigation closed a lane of Highway 50 for about an hour, JCPD stated.

The driver remained in critical condition Friday morning, according to police.

Morgan County chase ends in crash, teen seriously hurt

A 16-year-old Montreal, Missouri boy was seriously hurt in a crash after a chase with the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Thursday.

According to a Highway Patrol crash report, the crash happened on Highway 5, about 1500 feet south of Smooth Hill Dr. at 10:47 p.m.

The teen was driving a 2000 Chevrolet 1500 when law enforcement began the pursuit.

A trooper used his patrol vehicle, a 2023 Ford Explorer, to stop the pickup truck, causing it to skid and rotate counterclockwise. The truck went off the left side of the road and overturned, throwing the teen from the truck.

Sgt. Kyle Green said in a text message, “Due to the increasing danger to the public caused by the extremely dangerous driving of the suspect, the Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted a tactical vehicle intervention.”

The teen was flown to University Hospital with serious injuries. The trooper was not hurt.

The truck was totaled and the patrol car had minor damage. The report states the teen was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The patrol was assisted by deputies from Morgan and Camden Counties.

Investigation underway after body found at Civitan Park in Idaho Falls

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – An investigation is underway after the body of a 50-year-old woman was discovered at Civitan Park in Idaho Falls early Friday morning.

Idaho Falls Police have confirmed that the body was discovered by a mother and her two children while visiting the playground area.

Crime tape was put around the park as officers and deputies searched the scene. Idaho Falls Police say the investigation is ongoing and there is no confirmed cause of death at this time.

Father’s Day fashion show participants model clothing made by senior center’s sewing group

    MILWAUKEE (WDJT) — The United Community Center’s (UCC) senior center was packed Friday morning, for the first-ever Father’s Day fashion show, featuring music, dancing, and some handsome models.

The sewing group at the center has been working on clothing for this show for more than a month so the dads would look good.

Judy Hernandez showed us the shirt she made. She’s taking sewing lessons at UCC to help recover from heart surgery.

“For me, it was something to get my mind working,” Hernandez said. “My fingers. I had to retrain my whole body, actually, to start over again, so this was a big move for me.”

Some of the dads who modeled the new clothing did a little strutting for us and a senior dance group performed. There were lots of smiles in the crowd, and no hiding the pride among the women who created these outfits.

Suspect shot by bail bond agent at Roseville gas station while trying to flee custody, police say

    Michigan (WWJ) — A shooting erupted during a violent altercation on Thursday outside a gas station in Roseville, Michigan, after bail bond agents spotted someone who had skipped bail.

The Roseville Police Department said the wanted man, who was injured in the shooting, skipped bail on June 9.

Agents from the bail bond company tracked him to the Marathon gas station at 12 Mile Road and Interstate 94, where they saw the man standing outside a vehicle and talking to another man.

Police said the bail agents positioned their vehicles to block the man’s vehicle and exited their vehicles in an attempt to take him into custody. The man then got back into his vehicle and tried to escape by driving away.

During that attempt, the man pinned a bail bond agent who was standing between the vehicles. The man then accelerated his vehicle, trying to push the bail agent’s vehicle away.

Another bail agent broke the front driver-side window of the suspect’s vehicle and tried to shift the vehicle’s transmission into park. Police said the bail agent and driver fought, and the agent fired one round, with the bullet striking the suspect in the arm. The bail agents then got the man into handcuffs.

By this time, multiple police officers had arrived on the scene, according to a convenience store clerk who witnessed the commotion outside.

Residents who live near the gas station say they were stunned by what unfolded.

Christian Zafieropoulos, who has lived in the area for about four years, said he was sitting on his front porch when he heard the gunshot.

“Nothing like that here, so it’s really surprising to hear that there’s a gunshot,” Zafieropoulos said. “I heard a loud pop… a really pronounced, sharp pop, what I thought was a gunshot. Then a few minutes later, I saw ambulances and sirens everywhere.”

Another neighbor, Brandon McCartt, said he initially thought the scene was a crash but quickly realized it was more serious when he saw police activity.

McCartt said the location is especially concerning because it’s close to where children gather.

“I thought it was just an accident, but then I saw the police line. I knew it was worse,” McCartt said. “It’s shocking. It’s right at the corner where my kids go to school. It’s getting crazy out here in Roseville.”

The suspect was taken to an area hospital for treatment while remaining in police custody.

All bail agents involved in this call are licensed by the state of Michigan and hold Michigan concealed pistol license credentials, the police department said.

Detectives from the Roseville Police Department will consult with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office regarding possible charges.
