City of Brawley reacts to experiencing multiple earthquakes

Jessamyn Dodd

BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA) – The City of Brawley experienced a series of earthquakes Saturday evening, lasting into early Sunday morning.

“Everything fell from my shelves, my restroom, the cabinets…We had some broken coffee mugs and glasses and yeah a lot of shaking,” said George Prieto, a resident of Brawley.

The earthquakes clocked in at just under 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

According to the United States Geological Survey, aftershocks can occur within several hours, and even up to a day after the main shock.

The City of Brawley activated its Emergency Operations Center to support response efforts.

Prieto said he slept in his truck due to the constant aftershocks.

“I decided to sleep outside because the house was rocking and rolling and. It’s just a lot. It’s a lot of shaking for our valley,” he explained.

The California Governor’s Office advises residents to stop, cover and hold on during an earthquake, and to be familiar with exits and evacuation routes.

KYMA spoke to Battalion Chief Hector Garcia with ICFD, who said the building is used as a commercial kitchen, where food vendors prepare their food.

“We arrived on scene we had smoke showing from the eaves of the roof and along alongside the back of the property. It was a light smoke, however, it’s getting pretty thick, so, we had the guys come in, secure the water source, and get ready for entry,” Chief Garcia said.

Missouri lawmakers up against deadline to pass legislation, governor priorities

Alison Patton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Lawmakers are wrapping up final attempts to pass legislation this week as the legislative session ends Friday. While legislators have addressed many of Gov. Mike Kehoe’s legislative priorities, lawmakers are still working on some.

Senate Bill 971 would allow public school students to attend a school outside their home district starting in the 2028 school year. The bill is currently waiting on the Senate’s informal calendar for perfection on Monday.

Senate Bill 838, another legislative priority for the governor, would allow the maintenance of electric transmission facilities within highway rights-of-way. This bill is backed by Sen. Mike Cierpiot (R- Lee’s Summit). The bill would also update Missouri’s Renewable Energy Standard. It is on the informal calendar for a third reading in the Senate.

Senators have almost 60 House bills that are on the informal calendar for third reading. One of those is House Bill 3146, which would give the Secretary of State three tries to rewrite ballot language. This bill is closely modeled after Senate Bill 22, which a Missouri Supreme Court judge knocked down earlier this year.

The Senate also has over 30 of its own bills on the informal perfection calendar, and two bills on the formal calendar for perfection. That includes Senate Joint Resolution 97, which would put a 16-year term limit on representatives and senators between each chamber.

Lawmakers have already passed a few of the governor’s legislative priorities, like Senate Bill 863, which would add a governor-appointed appeals board to the Missouri State High School Activities Association. This bill is waiting for Kehoe’s signature.

That’s along with HJR 173 and 174, which would phase out the state’s income tax. Missouri voters will have the final say on whether it truly passes this fall when it appears on the ballot.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (KITV) — Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen spoke out in support of a Hawaiian monk seal after a rock was thrown at her in Lahaina in a viral incident.

A federal investigation began after a video appearing to show a man throwing a large rock toward a Hawaiian monk seal named Lani on Maui spread online. The viral incident involving the endangered animal led to swift response from law enforcement and widespread public outrage.

The County of Maui posted a video on social media on Thursday, May 8, with Bissen’s response to the incident. He said members of his team in Lahaina have been tracking and looking out for her for some time now.

Bissen went on to thank everyone who stepped in, protected her and reported the “unacceptable behavior.”

“Behavior like this will not be tolerated,” Bissen said. “I assure you that I will see to it personally that this individual is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Whether at the county, state or federal level, there must be serious consequences for anyone who harms or threatens protected wildlife.”

The suspect was detained and the case is expected to be referred to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement. At this time, he has not been charged.

“Lani, we have your back, and we hope to see you swimming by Front Street for many years to come,” Bissen said.

He concluded his message saying, “Let’s continue working together to protect our wildlife friends and preserve the deep respect we have for the creatures that share these islands with us.”
