Weather Alert Day: Wind chills improving after below-zero start to the week

Jessica Hafner

A strong cold front brought a round of dangerous cold on Monday, with below-zero wind chills in the early morning. Wind chills will remain cold on Monday in the teens, before a return to more average temperatures for New Year’s.

BLOG:

The big changes can be blamed on a deep trough pushing off the Plains, bringing a cold front through the Midwest Sunday night into Monday.

Temperatures have dropped from the 70s into the 30s, and eventually into the teens tonight as cold northwest winds ramp up.

As the front quickly moves east, temperatures fall though the day and strong winds pick up in the wake of low pressure. A Wind Advisory is in place for the possibility of 45-50 mph winds. Power outages are certainly possible at those wind speeds.

Strong winds from the northwest will push temperatures down into the teens by Monday morning, and drop wind chills to around -3 to 0 for the start of the day. Even as highs rise into the mid-20s Monday, wind chills remain in the teens through the afternoon. Tuesday morning wind chills will still be between around 5 and 10 degrees.

Make sure you have the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather App if you have plans to be out on Sunday morning for church services or holiday travel.

Local waste officials remind residents to properly dispose Christmas trees

KESQ News Team

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – With Christmas now behind us and the New Year just ahead, many Coachella Valley residents are preparing to say goodbye to their Christmas trees.

Local waste officials say real trees can be recycled through curbside pickup or drop-off programs. Residents should place their trees at the curb on their regular collection day through January 9th.

Trees taller than 6 feet must be cut in half, and all decorations must be removed, including tinsel, ornaments, plastic, bags, stands, braces, wire, and nails.

Residents may also drop off real trees at the Coachella Valley Compost Facility in Coachella or the Edom Hill Compost Facility in Cathedral City.

Proper disposal helps reduce landfill waste and allows trees to be recycled into compost or mulch.

Here’s how to take care of your holiday debt

Daniella Lake

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – U.S. consumers were projected to spend $1 trillion dollars this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. For those who put most of their holiday spending on their credit cards, News Channel 3 spoke with local independent financial advisor, Simon Hobbs, about the best way to tackle your credit card debt.

Here are Hobbs’ tips:

Keep track of and understand all your debts, whether that’s from credit cards or loans.

Write down the rate your paying on each debt.

Tackle the debt with the highest interest rate first. If you have an interest rate above 20%, you want to pay that down as soon as you can.

Hobbs also suggests that you first pay for the bills that sustain everyday life, like your mortgage and rent, electricity and gas bill. He shares that it’s best to automate those payments so “you don’t have to motivate yourself each month to make the payments you don’t really want to.”

Small businesses in Yuma receive sales boost from holiday shoppers

Paul Vozzella

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – An influx of seasonal visitors to Yuma provided a significant boost to local small businesses during the holiday shopping season, with owners reporting strong sales and increased customer traffic.

Abigail Gutierrez, owner of GM Accessories, said the surge was expected.

“We knew for a fact that December was gonna be a good month,” she said.

Business owners emphasized that the holiday period is not only beneficial but essential for sustaining operations throughout the year.

CJ Alberts, owner of Sunny’s Bookstore, highlighted the importance of the season.

“I think for a lot of small businesses, the holidays are when you make a major portion of your income. That’s especially true for bookstores,” she said.

Alberts added sales at Sunny’s Bookstore were up about 25% compared to last year’s holiday season. Gutierrez also credited community support and tourism for the success.

“People are coming into Yuma,” Gutierrez said. “I always say that the Yuma community is so welcoming, and they are really good about supporting small businesses.”

Vitalant hosts blood drive at ECH ahead of its three-day blood drive at Yuma Palms

Paul Vozzella

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The season of giving continues in Yuma as community members came together to participate in a local blood.

Exceptional Community Hospital (ECH) partnered with Vitalant to host the event, drawing approximately 20 local residents who volunteered to donate blood and help address ongoing shortages.

Blood drive coordinator Jeanne Foerster shared a personal reminder of the impact blood donations can have.

“I’m alive today because in June of 1963, somebody donated blood,” she stated. “I was 21 months old. We need [donors] out here. Think of all the people who are gonna wind up having surgery, your cancer patients. The list can go on and on.”

In addition to this recent event, the third annual Yuma Holiday Heroes Blood Drive will take place from Saturday, December 27, through Monday, December 29.

The drive will be held at the Yuma Palms Mall near Five Below, and all blood collected will go directly to Vitalant.

Organizers stress the importance of holiday blood drives, as donations typically decline during this time of year while the demand for blood remains high.

Community members interested in participating or learning more about the blood drive can find additional details and register here.
