Giannis inspires a Virginia boy with medical problems to dream big, stand tall

MILWAUKEE (WDJT) — Friday night’s Milwaukee Bucks game against the Chicago Bulls will have a special visitor in the crowd.

It’s the trip of a lifetime for a young boy from Virginia, who’s dreamed of seeing Giannis Antetokounmpo play in person.

Now, standing in front of Fiserv Forum, JR Slife’s jaw is dropped.

“I knew it’d be a tall building, but that’s huge, that’s massive,” Slife told CBS 58’s Ellie Nakamoto-White. “It’s cool!”

The 12-year-old has loved basketball since he can remember.

But not just for the sport itself — it was a way to help navigate him through his earlier years.

JR was born with severe clubbed feet and underwent multiple surgeries and therapy.

“He was in casts until he was about two years old, so he wasn’t walking until he was about two,” said his mom, Tamara, noting that he still has difficulty walking and running.

Despite that, JR picked up a basketball when he was around 3 and hasn’t put it down since.

“Despite his feet, despite his pain, it’s his passion and it’s his love, and it’s what’s kept him going,” Tamara said.

As a Port Washington native, Tamara added that she was hoping her son would also fall in love with her home team.

“We’ve been watching the Bucks from afar in Virginia this whole time,” Tamara said.

But it was #34 who stood out to JR specifically.

“I really love his story and it kind of inspired me because I was born with my feet backwards, and if he can overcome what he did, I can overcome what I need to and what I went through,” Slife said.

On Thursday, Nov. 6, JR boarded his first flight ever to travel to Milwaukee to attend Friday’s game.

“I was super excited, I was just jumping up and down, like going crazy,” JR said.

His dream? To play in the NBA as a point guard — and maybe even for the Bucks.

“Thank you, Giannis, for inspiring me to overcome my challenges with my feet,” JR said. “Thank you for being a great player and pretty much inspiring me. I’ve been following you since I was a little kid. Go Bucks!”

Gas line rupture briefly shuts down major Southern California freeway; shelter-in-place orders lifted

By Dean Fioresi

California (KCAL, KCBS) — The 5 Freeway north of Los Angeles was closed for hours and a shelter-in-place order was issued to more than 19,000 residents in Castaic after a natural gas line ruptured on Saturday afternoon.

L.A. County Fire Department officials say that they received reports of an explosion in the area just north of North Park Elementary School, near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place at around 4:20 p.m., which was then followed by reports of a strong gas smell.

The 5 Freeway is a major artery that links Southern California to the rest of the state. It runs north all the way through Oregon and Washington to Canada.

It’s unclear what caused the gas line, which is also referred to as a 600 psi “transmission gas line,” to rupture, but Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies told CBS Los Angeles that it was possibly caused by a mudslide.

Los Angeles County Fire Captain Brian Knight said that first responders were waiting on SoCalGas personnel to shut off the 34-inch main gas line so they could begin their investigation. It has since been mitigated by the gas company, but some residual gas was expected to continue seeping out for some time, Knight said.

A SoCalGas spokesperson told CBS LA that crews safely located and isolated the damaged section of the pipeline, and that once the remaining gas was vented, they would assess damage and begin repair work.

“The cause of the break has not been determined,” the spokesperson said. “However, significant land movement has been observed near the break.”

They said that there were “no indications” of an ignition or explosion.

The pipeline is used for transportation and will not impact homes or businesses in the area, officials told CBS LA. They said here were five “non-residential natural gas customers” that were experiencing outages from the break.

No evacuation orders have been issued, though LAFD firefighters asked that residents living within a one-mile radius of the gas line shelter in place until just before 10 p.m. Residents were also asked to close their doors, windows and vents and turn their HVAC systems off.

Firefighters said that there is no immediate threat to Los Angeles as a result of the leak, though residents throughout the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys should expect to experience a “strong smell of natural gas.”

California Highway Patrol officers issued a SigAlert just after 5 p.m., closing both northbound and southbound lanes north of Lake Hughes Road. Eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-318 and SR-126 were also closed to other traffic, as they were used to divert traffic from I-5. With the CBS LA helicopter overhead, lines of traffic were seen stretching back miles from the spot of the SigAlert.

The closure was lifted at around 8:45 p.m.

No injuries have been reported yet.

Arson and explosives detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene, as well as a hazardous materials team, deputies said.

In a post on X, California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office said that he had been briefed on the pipeline rupture and that the state’s Office of Emergency Services was assisting with response to the incident.

Texas (KTVT) — A confrontation, racist statements and an assault rifle were captured on video in East Texas last week.

Kenneth McGaha said he pulled up to the drive-through window at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Henderson, where he was told the order he and his girlfriend placed wasn’t ready.

“The guy told us, ‘It’s going to be a minute on your shakes; can you pull up and we will bring them right out?'”

McGaha said he started looking for a place to drive and wait when the car behind him in line was trying to leave.

“So, in order for them to leave, I had to pull up and get out of the way. So, I just pulled up and pulled into a parking spot, not knowing it was a handicap parking spot,” he said.

McGaha said he had just gotten his order when a stranger walked up to his vehicle and reached inside his vehicle. The stranger also made racist statements, which McGaha said were because he was parked in a handicapped space.

“Like he was calling me ‘boy’, I shouldn’t be here. Get your A-word over there,” McGaha described. “The next thing I know, I felt an arm like a brush coming across my head.”

McGaha was able to record some of the disturbing, racially charged comments before the unidentified man went back to his truck and grabbed an assault rifle out of the vehicle.

“I really thought me and my girlfriend were dead, because it was just up close range,” McGaha said. And that was the end of the confrontation.

He went to the Henderson Police Department to file a report.

The father of three insists that he didn’t do anything to deserve threatening words and actions by the man he wants to see criminally charged.

Henderson Police told CBS News Texas they are investigating the report made by McGaha.

According to officers, the initial investigation revealed a SUV was northbound, crossed the center median, and struck a sedan that was southbound.

At this time, it is unclear if drugs, alcohol or excessive speed are factors in the crash.

Road construction projects continue across Mid-Missouri

Euphenie Andre

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Drivers across Mid Missouri should plan for delays as several road construction and improvement projects continue or begin next week in multiple counties.

Many of the projects will run from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4. The impacted counties include: Boone Co., Callaway Co., Camden Co., Crawford Co., Howard Co., Laclede Co., Maries Co., Miller Co., Moniteau Co., Morgan Co., Osage Co., Phelps Co., Pulaski Co., and Washington Co.

Boone County

Crews will be working on Route 763, also known as College Avenue, where concrete curb replacement is scheduled from December 29 through December 31 between Rogers Street and East Ash Street. One lane will remain open while the work is underway.

Interchange improvements also continue along U.S. Route 63 at Route AC, or Grindstone Parkway. While most of the work is not expected to directly impact traffic, motorists are urged to stay alert for crews and equipment close to the roadway. That long-term project is scheduled to continue through Nov. 2026.

Work on the Highway 63 and I-70 Connector is expected to continue for the next two years before completion. MoDOT’s Eric Kopinski said crews will focus on building new bridges over Hinkson Creek in 2026.

“The 63/70 interchange is a lot of puzzle pieces,” Kopinski explained. “If we try to put too many together at once, the impacts would be so significant that it would disrupt traffic even more than it does today.”

At some point over the next two years, drivers will be shifted onto the new eastbound bridge as construction progresses.

In the new year MoDot will start by adding the third lane on I-70 from the Missouri River to Midway.

“Providence over I-70 will be a location where we will demolish that bridge over the summer and work as hard as we can to rebuild that but will be a big impact for the local area,” Kopinski said.

Meanwhile, the North Outer Road 70 east of Columbia remains closed near Little Cedar Creek for a culvert extension project. Drivers will need to use alternate routes, as the closure is expected to remain in place through Feb. 2026.

Callaway County

Several roadside projects are planned through early Jan. Work is scheduled along Route D, Routes J and UU, and Route A, with one lane remaining open in each location as crews flag traffic through work zones. Pavement construction also continues on I-70 between Route M and Kingdom City, with similar lane closures expected as part of the Improve I-70 Program.

Additional delays are possible on I-70, where new pavement construction is underway from west of St. Charles Road to the Callaway County line as part of the Improve I-70 Project. Motorists can expect intermittent and long-term lane closures, with the project scheduled for completion in 2027.

Concrete has been poured on the section of I-70 between Route J and Route M, and only two lanes in each direction will remain open until next fall, MoDOT officials told ABC 17.

The decision comes after reviewing speed and crash data along with consulting with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and local first responders, who provided guidance on keeping the roadway safe while construction continues.

“So next spring, you’ll start to see crews back out there really attacking that section hard,” said Kopinski. “From Route M at Hatton Road to Kingdom City, we’ll add a third lane eastbound and westbound on I-70 and rebuild the existing pavement. It will look very similar to what drivers have seen over the past year.”

By this time next year, drivers can expect 12 to 13 miles of six-lane roadway fully striped and open to traffic.

“As we move forward, we’re going to continue to take a close eye and say as we open sections, what makes the best sense for the safety of the traveling public, but also the safety of our workers as well for each area,” Kopinski said.

The US 54 interchange is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

“We’re really hoping and trying hard to complete all interchange work before lake season really goes full speed in the summer,” Kopinski said.

Later this winter and into the new year, additional activity will take place at the Kingdom City interchange. Officials warn that in mid-spring or early summer a bridge demolition will shift drivers onto newly constructed bridges.

“We have to new briges for northbound and southbound US 54 over I-70. We’re going to switch traffic out of those two new bridges and then we’ve got to demolish over one weekend,”

Camden County

Drivers may encounter delays on multiple routes as culvert replacements take place on Route A near Prairie Rose Road and along Route C at various locations from December 29 through Jan. 2. One lane will remain open in these areas, with traffic controlled by flagging crews.

On U.S. Route 54, pavement widening and driveway entrance improvements continue from Business Route 5 to Bumper Hill Road. While one lane in each direction remains open, traffic has been shifted and the center turn lane is closed.

This phase of the project is expected to be completed in spring 2026.

Miller County

A culvert replacement project is planned on Route D at Lola Circle from Dec. 29 through Jan. 2. One lane will remain open, and motorists should expect brief delays as crews flag traffic through the work zone.

Moniteau County

The roundabout construction continues at the intersection of Route 87 and Route C.

The intersection remains open but has been reduced to one lane, with temporary signals directing traffic through the area. Motorists should plan for delays, as the project is scheduled for completion in Jan. 2026.

Morgan County

Roadside work is planned along Route 52 between Route FF and Route 135, along with a culvert replacement on Route Y, both running from Dec. 29 through Jan. 2.

One lane will remain open in each area with traffic flagged through the work zone. Roundabout construction also continues at the intersection of Route 52 and Route 5 in Versailles, with completion expected for Jan. 2026.

Osage County,

Crews will be replacing culverts along Route C at various locations from Dec. 29 through January 2. One lane will remain open, and motorists should expect traffic to be guided through the work zone by flagging operations.

Transportation officials are reminding drivers to slow down, remain alert, and obey all posted signage when traveling through construction areas.
