IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) – A strike involving 70 Imperial Valley transit workers has ended after 15 days.

On Tuesday, workers voted in favor of ending the blockade at the City of El Centro offices

This was confirmed by Flavio Grijalva, a union representative of Teamsters Local 542.

Full service is expected to be restored starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, after operating on a limited basis during the strike.

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) – An Arizona organization is offering to help eligible households with their bills.

Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLA) will be on-site at Las Brisas Apartment with assistance for APS Crisis Bills.

The assistance event will be on January 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m at 1579 N. Rio Seco St., San Luis, Arizona 85349.

Assistance is on a first come, first served basis, with pre-screening and appointments encouraged.

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA) – Somerton is hosting an event you can enjoy while helping the community at the same time.

The Hole-in-One golf tournament is Saturday, January 31 at the Cocopah RV and Golf Resort. Check in is at 7 a.m and start time is at 8 a.m.

Registration is still open for teams of three players.

All proceeds will go to a good cause.

“The money that goes from the tournament goes towards the senior center. That way we can fund their activities get more money towards the seniors events, activities that they have or any other things that they may need,” said Stephanie Pereda, Somerton special events coordinator.

Participants have the chance to win a 2025 SUV if they make a hole-in-one shot.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Sunrise Optimist Club of Yuma and Yuma Special Olympics are hosting the Third Annual Pickleball Fundraiser in March.

The event is taking place Saturday, March 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Cocopah RV & Golf Resort.

This is to support the Special Olympic athletes.

The event will consist of three groups, Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles. There will also be two age divisions, Cucumbers (54 years and below) and Pickles (55 years and above).

The event schedule is as follows:

Saturday, March 14

Pickles

Women’s: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Men’s: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cucumbers

Women’s: 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Men’s: 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 14

Pickles Mixed: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Cucumbers Mixed: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The registration deadline is March 2. It costs $70 per team, and those who sign up will receive a T-shirt and a swag bag.

A Taste of Yuma Palms Regional Center is being held on Tuesday, January 27 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Participating businesses at Yuma Palms will offer free samples.

Locals can collect stamps for their menu cards to enter a chance to win a $100 gift card for their choice of restaurant or store.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning a prescribed burning at Senator Wash North Shore.

The burn is planned for January 27 and will be about 17 miles north of Yuma.

Piles of vegetation will be burned throughout the day.

Access around the area may be restricted for public safety.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is looking for a suspect involved in a hit-and-run over the weekend.

On Sunday night near Gila Street and First Street, a Honda ran into a Dodge Journey and then struck a light pole.

The 23-year-old from the Dodge was taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries.

YPD as some advice for people who get angry on the road

“Getting into a road rage incident with somebody in the middle of the street, trying to strike them, could cause serious damage, you could kill them, it’s not worth it just for an inconvenience for a second,” said Sgt. Lori Franklin.

The suspect driving the Honda left the scene and police are still looking for him.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The man accused of a fatal stabbing at a convenience store in Yuma has failed his second insanity evaluation.

27-year-old Angel Witrado is charged with first-degree murder in the October 2024 stabbing death of Justin Arviso at a Circle K in Yuma.

Witrado was found competent and will not undergo a third evaluation.

Arviso’s brother spoke in court, saying he believes Witrado is coherent despite his claims of insanity.

Witrado is scheduled to return to court next month.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Fire Department (YFD) responded to a house fire over the weekend.

YFD was called to the area of E. 26th Place and S. James Avenue just before 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

When crews arrived, they found brown smoke coming from the roof of the residence.

Firefighters quickly secured the scene and opened portions of the ceiling to locate and extinguish the fire before it spread further.

No injuries were reported.
