Fire At Former Solvang Restaurant Determined To Be Arson

Jarrod Zinn

SOLVANG, Calif. (KEYT) – Fire investigators just determined that arson destroyed a former Solvang restaurant a year and half ago.

Investigators are looking for three people who are believed to be locals.

Officials at the Santa Barbara County Fire Department believe those three individuals are from the Santa Ynez Valley and they appear to be young.

Investigators have determined three individuals appearing in surveillance footage the night of December 5th, 2024 purposely set fire to what used to be Sear Steakhouse on Fourth Place.

“Every investigation runs at its own pace,” says Captain Michael Gray, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. “They’re all unique. The fire investigation section, they release as much information as they can as quickly as they can.”

Images show them leaving the building fifteen minutes prior to the start of the fire.

“They could be juveniles or young adults,” says Capt. Gray. “That wasn’t completely clear as far as nailing down an age group.”

They are then seen crossing the street and joining spectators to watch the blaze.

Since the incident, the building has had to be completely brought down for safety reasons.

“That would have been something that would have been determined by Building and Safety, if it was determined that the building couldn’t be salvaged,” says Capt. Gray.

Officials say the Solvang City Council is currently looking at the possibility of purchasing the lot with the intention of expanding Parking Lot 3.

“Through the course of the investigation, it is believed that they are local to the Santa Ynez Valley,” says Capt. Gray.

The county fire department released the declaration of arson on Monday.

“The fire investigation section has been unable to identify these three individuals,” says Capt. Gray. “So now we are asking for the public’s assistance.”

Anyone who recognizes the three or has any other information is encouraged to contact investigators.

The department’s Fire Investigation Unit can be reached at (805)686-5074 or by email at fireinfo@sbcfire.com.

Gauchos score in every inning but one in win at Cal Baptist

Mike Klan

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KEYT) – For the second day in a row, the UC Santa Barbara Baseball team (26-12) took a big early lead and hung on late, this time out-lasting California Baptist (31-10) in a rollercoaster, 11-6 victory. The Gauchos scored the first eight and last three runs of the game, while surviving a six-run eighth inning from the Lancers. Santa Barbara smacked six extra-base hits, including home runs from both Liam Barrett and Colin Beazizo, with Barrett, Corey Nunez and Xavier Esquer all finishing with multiple RBIs on the night. Two-out clutch was the theme of the night, as eight of the Gauchos’ 11 runs (and all six of the Lancers’) came with no margin for error in that column.

On the mound, Calvin Proskey’s four scoreless innings of work helped the Gauchos build their big lead, Josh Jannicelli made it stick, then Chase Hoover led the firefighting efforts when things got wild late. Jannicelli got the win and Hoover his third save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENEDSanta Barbara showed up at James W. Totman Stadium, a venue where they had never previously won, and got right to the business of hitting, scoring in each of the first six innings. Nunez was hit by a pitch to set up Nate Vargas’ RBI single in the first, then Barrett’s two-out walk kept the second inning alive for Esquer to drive a double into the left-center gap. A misfield out there let Esquer get to third and Barrett home to double the lead.

Nunez then started the third inning on third base with a straight-up triple to center field, coming home on William Vasseur’s RBI groundout. It was back to two-out magic in the fourth, as Barrett’s double preceded back-to-back hit batters to load the bases and bring Nunez back to the dish. He promptly smacked a two-run single up the middle and it was 5-0 Gauchos. Rowan Kelly’s double set up Nick Husovsky to single him home in the fifth (you guessed it, with two outs), then Liam Barrett clobbered a home run well over the tall wall in right field to lead off the sixth. For the second time in as many days, the Gauchos were up a touchdown.

While the offense was turning the Lancers’ pitches into batting practice, Proskey was busy reminding everyone why he was Santa Barbara’s Saturday starter last season. He picked up where he had left off at UCLA, allowing just three hits and no walks or runs over four innings, while striking out four. He won a nine-pitch at-bat for one of those punchouts as part of a perfect second, then finished a perfect third with back-to-back K’s, including a seven-pitch at-bat. To end his evening, he escaped a two-on-no-outs jam in the fourth.

Jannicelli took over and showed why he is the next man up in the Gauchos’ line of pitching succession. The freshman retired the first six batters he faced, issuing four of his five strikeouts on the night in that span. Despite a pair of errors, Jannicelli got out of the seventh unscathed before finally surrendering the two runs on his ledger in the eighth.

The Gauchos put up their eighth run in the top of that eighth inning on Beazizo’s home run to straightaway center field, but the Lancers finally found an answer in the bottom half of the frame. A sequence of a home run, walk, double, double, single and home run got the home team back within two before Hoover entered and put out the fire with a backwards K.

If the double play is a pitcher’s best friend, what the Gauchos’ offense did in the top of the ninth must be a very close second. A hit batter and a walk set up Noah Karliner for a pinch-hit, RBI single to get one of those six runs back, then Barrett’s sacrifice fly brought home Santa Barbara’s 10th run of the game to put the Gauchos four runs clear. Esquer’s two-out single brought home Karliner and got Santa Barbara out of “slam range,” with their 11-6 lead meaning not even a grand slam would tie the game. Not that they would have to worry about such a thing. Hoover was not perfect but he got the job done, striking out the side around a two-out single and error.

UP NEXTThe Gauchos come home this weekend, hosting Cal State Fullerton in a Big West series April 24-26, then hosting No. 1 UCLA on Tuesday, April 28 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Tickets for all home games are on sale now at ucsbgauchos.com/tickets.

Arnie’s Rooftop Bar Opens with Ocean and Mountain Views in Carpinteria

John Palminteri

CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) – The newest spot to get both an ocean and a mountain view in one stop in Carpinteria is Arnie’s Rooftop Bar.

It is located on the second floor of the new Linden Square at 778 Linden Avenue in downtown Carpinteria.

The ribbon cutting Monday morning took place just before the noon grand opening. It will open at noon daily and stay open until 10 p.m. on most nights, but possibly later on Friday and Saturday.

It is uniquely designed with both the bar feel and the lounge feel. There are warming fire areas, heaters and a retractable awning to help with the climate control. The Carpinteria coast has welcoming weather most of the year, but as with other coastal sites, there are challenges when it is gloomy, rainy, or windy. That’s where the other comfort designs will make a difference.

Down below is the popular Linden Square with restaurants and shops over the property which covers a full city block.

Owner Arnie Sturham left the Pacific Northwest and a restaurant life there for the Santa Barbara-Carpinteria area.

He says the site for his rooftop bar, “is absolutely gorgeous. The tree lights up (overhanging the front edge.) The exterior lighting at this building is incredible, it glows and sunsets are spectacular.”

The overall Linden Square vibe has something for everyone. But upstairs, “we are 21-years and over and I love the plaza downtown stairs. It is all ages. I have two kids myself that are grown now, but I think it is a spot for families, but I think to have something upstairs that is a little quieter is appreciated.”

He hopes to coordinate some food from downstairs with the upstairs drinks in the future.

There will also be some occasional light music.

The full bar has locally sourced wine and beer labels that will be recognized by area residents and some will be rotated throughout the year.

For more information go to: Arnie’s and Linden Square.

UCSB Races to Digitize Bee Collections for A.I. Era

Patricia Martellotti

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – Tiny wings. Hidden details. A world rarely seen is coming into focus.

“Insects are really numerous. There’s millions of insects on the planet. They’re incredibly important for pollination like bees,” said researcher Katja Seltmann of UC Santa Barbara.

The Big Bee Project aims to unlock hidden information inside collections that have long sat in drawers.

Researchers at UC Santa Barbara are digitizing vast collections of bees and other pollinators—some gathered decades ago.

“What we’re doing is high resolution imaging and using computer vision and new technologies like AI to try to understand bee traits,” said Seltmann.

Each specimen holds clues about where species lived, how they shifted, and what may now be at risk.

“That allows us to test hypothesis about evolution for bees, and also to use those images, train machine, learning models that we’re going to use to sort through images we collect in the field,” said assistant researcher Chris Evelyn of UC Santa Barbara.

Once the insects are digitized researchers can make that data accessible to scientists all over the world.

Through detailed imaging and careful labeling, every insect becomes part of a growing global archive.

The expanding database helps researchers follow climate patterns, habitat loss, and pollinator decline.

With millions more still waiting to be processed, the work continues—one specimen at a time.

Santa Barbara Skies See Kites Flying High After Weekend Delay

Alissa Orozco

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – On Sunday, the Santa Barbara Kite Festival took flight from the ‘Great Meadow’ here in Santa Barbara.

Unfortunate weather delayed the festival by a week, but that only built up anticipation for the beloved family-friendly event’s 40th anniversary.

Hundreds gathered around the hills at Santa Barbara City College to enjoy an afternoon of great weather, food, music – and of course, some kite flying.

“I saw a mom like rolling down the hill with her kid, right? It brings out the inner child in you, so I think it’s just, it’s so hard to not feel like kid-like energy,” said festival-goer, Cara Brown.

Every year, kites of all colors, shapes, and sizes fill the Santa Barbara sky – its something residents look forward to every year.

“It’s not just me who loves flying kites –its being out with people, but it’s good because the kids put down their phones and they roll down the hill and grandma’s trying to roll down behind them and so I’m like, “oh man, this is so cool,” said festival-goer, Darryl Henry.
