News Channel 3-12

Below is a press release from the Santa Barbara Police Department regarding an upcoming DUI checkpoint

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On June 28th 2026, the Santa Barbara Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 5:00p.m. to 1:00a.m. at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Officer C. Garcia said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Santa Barbara Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SLO County Certifies Election Results – Jimmy Paulding & Jim Dantona Win Supervisor Races

Dave Alley

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) – The San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Office has officially certified the June 2, 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election.

With the counting completed, results showed Jimmy Paulding and Jim Dantona won the two supervisor races that were contested during this year’s election.

Paulding, the District 4 incumbent, beat challenger Adam Verdin by a margin of 1,487 votes.

Paulding received 11,398 votes (53.49%), while Verdin collected 9,911 votes (46.51%).

In District 2, Dantona won the race to replace longtime supervisor Bruce Gibson, who has served in the seat for the past 20 years, but did not seek re-election.

Dantona, who currently serves as Gibson’s chief of staff, rallied after trailing on election night and wound up winning by 1,204 votes.

Dantona received 9,375 votes (53.43%), while Michael Erin Woody captured 8,171 votes (46.57%).

Incumbent Elaina Cano easily won re-election in a three-person for San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder.

Cano avoided a runoff in November by earning 53,455 votes (63.53%), while challengers Vanessa Rozo finished in second place with 22,482 votes (26.72% ) and Gaea Powell finished third with 8,210 votes (9.76%).

In a release, the Elections Office said over the last 10 days, staff conducted the required 1% Manual Tally, a hand count that serves to confirm the accuracy of the machine tabulators.

The office also said staff researched and confirmed the eligibility of ballots cast provisionally and remade ballots that needed to be duplicated because of damage or characteristics like red ink or stray marks that would interfere with a tabulator’s ability to scan and record the votes.

“This election was different in that we had the new legally required 13-day deadline for countingmost of the ballots,” said Cano. “At the same time, we saw a change in the flow of ballots coming in because so many people waited to vote just before or on Election Day. That meant a compressed timeline for processing and scanning many, manythousands of mail ballots.”

The voter turnover countywide was 55%, a number six percentage points higher than the last gubernatorial primary, in June 2022.

“SLO County continues to rank among the highest in overall turnout, which I think speaks to theengagement of our voters as well as the faith they have in our local elections processes,” saidCano. “I’m proud of our voters, our staff, and all of the community members who stepped upand came together to ensure a successful election.”

Dave Alley

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) – A new homeless community that has been constructed with 3D-printed technology is set to open in San Luis Obispo.

Welcome Home Village is located at the corner of Johnson Avenue and Bishop Street on what was previously the Bishop Medical Plaza parking lot.

Now, after a year of construction, it’s been converted into a small collection of 54 housing units that have been created using 3D technology that has helped to reduce costs and accelerate delivery.

Gardena-based Azure Printed Homes said each home has been built through recycling approximately 150,000 recycled plastic bottles.

Welcome Home Village is a collaboration with the City of San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, along with project partners DignityMoves, Azure Printed Homes, and Good Samaritan Shelter.

The site includes 14 interim support units and 40 permanent supportive housing units and is specifically intended to house homeless individuals that have been living in the Bob Jones Trail area.

Residents will have access to a range of services that includes case management to medical coordination, substance use disorder counseling, mental health counseling.

Welcome Home Village rsidents will share facilities, such as laundry areas, landscaped open space, and other multiple community spaces, including work-study areas and private offices for meetings with case managers and other service professionals.

Earlier this month, an official ribbon-cutting was held, but the site isn’t quite yet ready to open.

Final construction work is still happening on the property and is expected to be completed in the near future.

Upcoming All-Ages Concert to Fill Plaza Del Mar Band Shell

John Palminteri

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – A free Sunday show will take place at the Plaza Del Mar Band Shell in Santa Barbara as part of the new schedule of events in the iconic and refurbished location.

Coastal Sounds, a free and all-ages micro-festival featuring emerging bands, takes the stage Sunday, June 28. Coastal Sounds’ lineup features local rockers Green Room Paradise, Dylan Cunningham, Ladyfinger, Looking West and more.

The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Pictures from days gone by show the public out for shows on Sundays as part of their regular Santa Barbara outings, well before the invention of TV.

The event, co-organized by Genevieve Mack, a 2026 Santa Barbara High School Media Arts and Design (MAD) Academy graduate, brings together sounds of local acoustic folk, surf rock, indie, and blues to the stage from 3 pm until 8 pm.

The public is encouraged to use the site for picnics (BYO picnic), and bring their own seating, blankets, games and some concessions will be on-site. Chris Benedict, DJ of Ability, delivers full sound production for the concert.

“As most Santa Barbara County music venues are 21+ and focus on selling alcohol, we wanted to offer local music for all ages in an beautiful, historic park ” said Genevieve Mack, Co-Founder of All the Above Productions, the event’s producer. “We’d love for June’s Coastal Sounds to be ‘Act I’ in a series making local music more accessible to all audiences in Santa Barbara.”

Mack said it is exciting, “to see a lot of different age ranges because we don’t really get to see a lot of that when it comes music.”

Assistant Parks Director Jazmin LeBlanc said compared to past shows, they were looking forward to “be able to explore having a younger crowd than we typically get. “

Trey Murphy is with the band Ladyfinger that will be performing. He says, “I can tell this has been built for nice acoustics and a nice amphitheater for people to sit out here and hopefully catch a nice wave of music for the day. This is definitely different this is mixing a historic site with modern music and a modern crowd.  I think this is going to be a really special time for everyone.”

They expect the audience to bring what they need to have an afternoon on the lawn for the music show. “This is a space no matter who you are you can enjoy live music  which everyone deserves,” said Mack.

Coastal Sounds is part of Arts in the Open, a series presented by the Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with the PARC Foundation, which celebrates a wide range of artistic experiences designed for all ages.
