Clouds slightly increase Sunday for coasts, tracking near normal conditions

Andie Lopez Bornet

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service. It went into effect at 5:12 p.m. and is expected to expire by 6 p.m. Saturday. The thunderstorm is expected to effect Ventura county mountains along highway 33 and Santa Barbara mountains, specifically Big Pine Mountain. Quarter sized hail with winds up to 60 mph is a concern, so be sure to be extra cautious. The storm is drifting to the southwest at 5-10 mph.

Onshore flow gave way for the coasts Saturday and overcast skies prevailed. Temperatures were slightly cooler than expected, but still hot for the interior. As we head into Saturday evening, temperatures begin to slightly cool.

Sunday, for the beaches expect to wake up to overcast skies. The sunshine will burn through by midday or afternoon. Immediately next to the beaches, it may be a little more stubborn. High pressure is moving more north and inland. For the interior areas, temperatures will still be warm. A heat advisory remains in effect for the inland areas of San Luis Obispo county until 7 a.m.

Humidity levels are increasing as remnants from hurricane Alvin from the southeast move through the region. Possible drizzle and thunderstorms are expected for higher terrain areas of Santa Barbara and Ventura.

By next week, conditions will be near normal and feel more like Spring weather as an upper low moves south along the coast. More marine layer returns and temperatures will be 1-4 degrees below average this time of year.

Missed opportunity for Mustangs as they drop opener at NCAA Regionals to Arizona

Mike Klan

EUGENE, Oregon. – Arizona overcame Cal Poly’s 10-2 advantage in hits, scoring three times in the second frame while three Wildcat pitchers made that output just enough for a 3-2 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Eugene Regional on Friday at PK Park.

Coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs tallied single runs in the sixth and eighth frames to make it a one-run game but stranded nine runners on the basepaths, including a fourth-inning bases-loaded opportunity and two runners on base in the fifth and sixth frames.

Cal Poly (41-18) will play Oregon or Utah Valley in an elimination game Saturday at noon. Arizona (40-18) faces the Oregon-Utah Valley winner at 6 p.m.

The Mustangs collected double-digit hits for the 38th time in their last 52 games, but Arizona jumped to a 3-0 lead on an RBI triple by Tommy Splane and a two-run home run off the bat of Easton Breyfogle, his fifth of the year, in the second inning.

After the blast, Cal Poly sophomore right-hander Griffin Naess retired 14 consecutive Wildcat batters to keep the Mustangs in the game. Naess (7-3) would go on to finish seven innings against the Big 12 Tournament champions, allowing just the three runs and two hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Cal Poly scored a run in the sixth inning as Casey Murray Jr. produced his second leadoff double of the game, took third on a groundout and came home on Dylan Kordic’s single to left-center field.

The Mustangs closed the gap to a single run in the eighth on Cam Hoiland’s fifth home run of the season, a shot to left field with one out.

Dante Vachini led off the ninth with a single up the middle, but Arizona closer Tony Pluta notched a strikeout and a game-ending double play grounder to third base to close out the game and earn his 13th save of the year.

Cal Poly loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning but a called third strike ended the threat. The Mustangs also had runners on first and third with two outs in the fifth and first and second with one out in the sixth, but a comebacker and a line drive to left resulted in inning-ending outs respectively.

Sophomore righty Owen Kramkowski (9-5) went seven innings for the victory, allowing one run and eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Garrett Hicks allowed the run in the eighth before Pluta closed it out in the ninth.

Jake Torres pitched a 1-2-3 eighth in relief of Naess for Cal Poly.

Cal Poly’s 10 hits included Murray’s two doubles, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Hoiland and Vachini each added two hits while Ryan Fenn stretched his hitting streak to 19 contests with a first-inning single.

World’s Top Ranked Bull Rider Wacey Schalla Headlines a Strong Field at this Year’s Santa Maria Elks Rodeo

Dave Alley

SANTA MARIA, Calif. – The 82nd Annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Parade has once again attracted an elite field of rodeo competitors, including budding young superstar Wacey Schalla, who is currently the world’s top ranked bull rider.

The 19-year-old from Arapaho, Oklahoma is not only ranked first in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings in bull riding, he’s also ranked second in the overall standings.

On Wednesday night, Schalla kicked off the Elks Rodeo by capturing first place in the Xtreme Bulls competition, with a top score of 89.5 points.

For Schalla, who is coming off his first trip to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last December, this marks his first ever trip to Santa Maria.

“That’s the best thing about rodeos,” said Schalla. “You get to go see tons of different places and cool places like this, right next to the coast. It’s beautiful country and I’m excited to come back next year.”

With the way he has performed over the first two nights of the Elks Rodeo, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Schalla returning back to the Central Coast year after year.

On Thursday, he also earned the top score in the bareback competition with a score of 85.5 points.

“I can’t complain,” said Schalla. “I’ve been super blessed. I won the Xtreme Bulls the first night and then and made a good bareback ride. We’ll see how it holds.”

Schalla noted the Santa Maria weather is much different than he’s used at home in Oklahoma and in many of the other places the rodeo circuit takes him to, but added he is impressed with what he has experienced so far with the Elks Rodeo.

“They accommodate you,” said Schalla. “It’s an accommodating town and the rodeo overall makes us want to come back. Whenever you get off your horse and throw your arms up in the air, and you can’t even hear yourself, you know you’re in the right place.”

With the Xtreme Bulls win already under his belt, Schalla is hoping to add even more to his already growing collection of victories and payouts when the Elks Rodeo finishes on Sunday.

He’s aiming to add a pair of wins in both the bull riding and bareback riding competitions.

Alissa Orozco

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. – The 14th annual FCA All-Star Classic is set to kick off this Saturday, where the best of the best in High School football will battle it out on the field.

The event will showcase top graduating seniors, as standout athletes from San Luis Obispo County face off against their counterparts from Northern Santa Barbara County in a highly anticipated showdown.

All-star game chairman, Greg Dickinson, stopped by the Morning News to preview the big game and discuss how the community can support and give back to participating schools.

Tickets are avalible online and in-person. All walk-up tickets sold will benefit FCA, but fans who purchase online can designate which school they want those funds to go to. Proceeds from online ticket sales for the game go directly back to the participating high schools athletic departments.

Athletes from up and down the coast will represent their schools, including Lompoc High running back Jacob White, and players from Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria, Righetti, Arroyo Grande, Santa Ynez, Nipomo, and many more.

The San Luis Obispo squad will be lead by Morro Bay head football coach Robert Dougherty, while the North Santa Barbara squad is lead by Santa Ynez head football coach Josh McClurg.

“What’s unique about it is we ask at least one coach from each school to be at each of the practices in the game,” Dickinson says. “So we’re modeling not only the players coming across rival lines to work together to be future Central Coast leaders, but we’re asking the coaches who often were rivals themselves to spend a week together and and coach the game.”

“So it’s it’s very unique model and it’s paying dividends for the community.”

The 14th annual FCA All-Star football classic will take place THIS Saturday, May 31st starting at 6:00pm at Santa Ynez High School.

Tickets are available online.

For those who can’t attend the game, Santa Ynez High School will be live streaming the event for free on their Youtube Channel.
