SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. (KEYT) – The new Art Labbé gallery in the Santa Barbara Funk Zone hosted a grand opening celebration Thursday night with a special exhibition. 

Liberté showcases pieces from a neurodivergent art and poetry contest.

The theme is ‘This is Me,’ celebrating the individuality of artists with cognitive and developmental disabilities.

Art Labbé offers free weekly art and music classes for people with special needs.

Art Labbé Santa Barbara joins other locations for the gallery in Santiago, Chile and Coral Gables, Florida.

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (KEYT) – Arroyo Grande Police arrested Fritz Schnoor, 35, for homicide, attempted homicide and burglary just before midnight on Sept. 18.

AGPD officers received a 911 call at the 600 block of Victoria Way and found two adults with stab wounds before taking both to the hospital.

One of the people died from their injuries and AGPD officers later arrested Schnoor a short distance away from the home.

Schnoor acted alone in committing the assault, no additional suspects are involved and there is no known threat to public safety after an initial AGPD investigation.

Schnoor was booked into the SLO County Jail under the following charges and is being held without bail:

California Penal Code 187(a) – Homicide

California Penal Code 664/187(a) – Attempted Homicide

California Penal Code 459 – Burglary

This remains an ongoing investigation and the AGPD encourages those with video or other information on the case to contact the following number.

GUADALUPE, Calif. (KEYT) – The City of Guadalupe is inching closer to launching its first farmers market.

Organizers plan to open the “Cosecha Guadalupe Farmers Market” in January.

This project has been five years in the making.

The city has waived the rental fee at Le Roy Park for the first six months of the market.

“Our vision is to have a farmers market that serves our entire community, to have a whole number of booths at Le Roy Park where people can come and enjoy visiting the vendors and also making a family day of it,” says Stephanie Krouse, a committee member of the Guadalupe Business Association.

Now organizers need to raise funds for staff and equipment.

“We want to have a very strong foundation that it’s built upon so the community will be able to enjoy it for many years to come,” says the Guadalupe Business Association’s president Judy Wilson.

The application for state certification as a recognized farmers market is under review.Organizers say they are working to let residents use EBT benefits to buy produce.

“We’ve been to the city multiple times to make sure we’re doing this as a team, because ultimately this is a benefit to the City of Guadalupe, I’d like to think that we’re an asset, meeting and doing the background work to make this happen,” says Mireya Pina, a volunteer with the Guadalupe Business Association.

On Sunday, they’ll be holding a fundraiser for the market here at the Guadalupe Social Club, which will be open to the public.

Funds raised will fill in critical gaps to cover fees and expenses necessary for running the market for the first two years.

“Just really want to encourage anyone who has an interest for food equity, anyone that’s interested in being a part of this project and seeing it come to life, this is a perfect time to get involved,” says Pina.

Organizers say once it opens in January, the market will operate every Sunday.

This weekend’s fundraiser at the Guadalupe Social Club will also serve as a preview of the market with vendors exhibiting some of their produce, as well as information about getting more involved.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – The Santa Barbara Public Library’s Children’s Library is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, marking a decade of growth and impact for local families.

Since opening in 2015, the library has expanded its reach from 3,700 children a year to more than 39,000. The 6,000-square-foot space provides free story times, STEM activities, bilingual programs, and tutoring that foster literacy and learning.

Acting Library Director, Brandon Beaudette, says the Children’s Library has become a cornerstone for young readers to explore curiosity and discover a love of books.

A community celebration is planned for September 20, but library leaders emphasize that the true milestone is the difference the library has made in the lives of thousands of children over the past decade.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – The 88th Solvang Danish Days begins September 18-21. The theme this year is “Be Happy.”

Addie Madrid of Santa Ynez is this years 2025 Danish Maid. Madrid is carrying on the legacy following in the footsteps of her sister Aleena (Danish Maid 2022) her mother Ashlee Madrid (Danish Maid 1999) and her grandmother Glenda Jaeger Madrid (Danish Maid 1971).

Addie’s great-great-grandfather, Viggo Tarnow, came to the United States from Copenhagen in 1914. He settled in Minnesota where he met and married Cora, later moving his family, including their daughter, Marie, to California. Tarnow taught at Solvang’s Atterdag Folk School and helped to shape what is now the Atterdag Village of Solvang senior care center. His love for the Santa Ynez Valley ran deep, and through his dedication, Addie’s family became woven into the very fabric of Solvang.

VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) – On this week’s segment of “The Walkthrough with Joey,” Ventura High’s Tristan Phillips shows why his relentless work ethic and deep hometown pride have made him one of the 805’s true standouts.

The Oregon commit calls his routine a “Sunday-to-Sunday” grind, packed with lift days, recovery sessions, and constant fine-tuning. 

But to Phillips, effort is what separates good from the great. 

“No matter how physically gifted you are, your work ethic is going to take you so far,” he said.

Plenty of high schools throughout Southern California tried to lure the 4-star recruit away from Ventura, but Phillips chose to stay put. 

“I just wanted to be the hometown kid that I am,” he said. “It’s a full-circle moment, my dad grew up here, I’ve grown up here, and to go from Ventura High to being committed to Oregon, it means a lot.”

Now a senior, Phillips carries Ventura with him everywhere, even in ink. His tattoos honor his mom, sister, and roots, with “VTA” etched proudly across his tricep. 

“Born and raised here,” he said. “I like to put a lot of meaning behind my tattoos.”

As Ventura’s season hits its midway point, Phillips’ legacy as ‘the hometown kid made good’ is already etched in his game, his story – and yes, even on his skin.

Tonight, Phillips and the Cougars will make their way up the coast to Goleta to take on the Dos Pueblos Chargers.  

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

UC SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Soccer team defeated Cal Poly 3-1 on Thursday evening, with the Gauchos securing the win through two second-half goals. This victory marked the Gauchos’ seventh consecutive win, extending their unbeaten streak to nine games.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF”The first half, we were dominant because we knew the system they were going to play and we prepared for it, and the players executed that plan beautifully,” said Stumpf. “We only gave up the one goal and then we were very fortunate again that we responded so quickly. It was just a great overall performance by our team and an important 3 points against a very talented team.”

HOW IT HAPPENEDUC Santa Barbara dominated the early stages of the first half, maintaining offensive pressure with multiple corner kicks and shots on goal. Haley Phillips came close to putting UCSB on the board with a shot that hit the crossbar at the 5:56 mark. The Gauchos’ efforts paid off in the 37th minute when Chayse Yu scored the opening goal to put UC Santa Barbara ahead 1-0. The Mustangs attempted to respond with a couple of shots that tested goalkeeper Maddie Buckley, but their efforts were thwarted as Buckley secured crucial saves, preserving the 1-0 lead for the Gauchos at the end of the first half.

The second half of the match between the Gauchos and Mustangs began with both teams vying for control. Cal Poly was called offside early, and UC Santa Barbara committed several fouls in the first 15 minutes. The Mustangs intensified their offensive efforts with a sequence of shots around the 62nd minute, culminating in a goal in the 73rd minute, leveling the score at 1-1. However, UC Santa Barbara quickly responded when Phillips scored just 22 seconds later, assisted by Natalie Sheffey, regaining the lead at 2-1. UC Santa Barbara solidified their win as Olivia Howard scored the final goal with seven seconds remaining, securing a decisive 3-1 victory for the home team.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT)- Kira Elliott had 11 kills and Blake Saunders added seven of her own as Santa Barbara completed a sweep over Dos Pueblos in girls volleyball.

Sophomore Jules Horton dished out 29 assists as the Dons won 25-19, 25-20, 25-14.

Santa Barbara improves to 5-2 to complete the first round of Channel League play.

Dos Pueblos was led by Addison Low who had 11 kills.
