Kidney donor braves blizzard for Boston transplant surgery

BOSTON (WCVB) — A kidney donor drove nearly 18 hours through the recent blizzard to reach Boston in time for a life-saving transplant at Tufts Medical Center.

Colleen Richards, a nurse coordinator for the transplant team at Tufts Medical Center, was uncertain if the kidney transplant would happen. For months, she had February 25 circled on her calendar, marking the day Kelley Nixon was scheduled to donate a kidney to Michelle Wood.

“I think they get the date in their heads. It’s almost like a birthday. It’s a new birthday with their new kidney,” Richards said.

Wood had been living with Polycystic Kidney Disease, a genetic condition that is deadly without a transplant. She reached out to friends and family for help and discovered that Nixon was a match.

“She was very motivated, very excited, wanted to do something to help her friend’s spouse out, and she did,” Richards said.

Observed blizzardPowerful storm brings blizzard conditions to Massachusetts for first time since 2022 Nixon and her husband booked a flight from Anchorage to Boston but found themselves stuck in Chicago due to the blizzard.

“They opted to rent a four-wheel drive car on Monday morning and started the trek to Boston,” Richards said.

“It made things interesting, exciting, but routine and boring, which we like. We don’t want excitements in surgery,” said Dr. Manish Varma, a transplant surgeon at Tufts Medical Center.

Varma said there haven’t been any “excitements” during recovery either. Both Wood and Nixon are resting comfortably and looking forward to spring.

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina (WXII) — It’s a puzzle piece that was missing for two decades.

“You know what, on this particular case, that piece of the puzzle came through recently,” said Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.

Back in 2001, Michele Hundley Smith’s husband told investigators she left home to travel to K-Mart in Virginia to go Christmas shopping but never returned. She was 38-year’s old at the time.

“She applied for service that captured that information and alerted us,” Page said. “And so again, information sharing, collaboration with local state and federal authorities, and information services working with our national database, we were able to get that information in a timely manner and act on it.”

Over the span of time, extensive investigations were launched with the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI, and still Smith’s whereabouts remained unknown.

“The case does not close until the person is located and we get closure,” Page said. “It’s not stopped, we continue to advertise, put information out, advertise for Crimestoppers, and let people know that we’re trying to solve this case, we need help, we need that piece to the puzzle.”

Page said Smith asked them originally not to be in contact with her family, and they honored that, but he said he understands how hard this must be for loved ones.

“It’s got to be a lot, especially if you look at the kids their grown up now and what they’ve had to go through,” Page said.

At this point, he said they are not finding any reason to add additional criminal charges outside of the DWI charges stemming from November 2001.

“The investigators and our chief investigator advised me that it didn’t have substantial evidence for any criminal charges beyond that point,” Page said.

He said after the finding of Smith, he has one request to the community.

“If you have someone who goes missing, time is critical, the quicker the better, and now we have more technology,” Page said.

Smith was taken into custody on Wednesday at the request of Rockingham County authorities and will appear in court in March.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (WPBF) — The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with Florida’s Attorney General Office announced that a man linked to a string of thefts of trading cards at retail stores across the state was arrested.

Keith R. Wallis, 39, of Pompano Beach, was arrested in Broward County on Monday and is facing two counts of felony organized retail theft, three counts of felony dealing in stolen property and one count of felony money laundering.

The Attorney General’s Office said on Thursday that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Statewide Prosecution led the investigation into Wallis with the help of sheriff’s offices in Broward and Martin counties.

The Attorney General’s Office said between July 2025 and February 2026, Wallis committed 75 thefts at multiple retail store locations.

The thefts spanned from Orlando to Homestead.

Wallis is alleged to have selected multiple large boxes of trading cards, as well as an equal number of 99-cent taco seasoning packets.

Wallis allegedly went to the self-checkout line at the stores and only paid for the taco seasoning packets and left the stores with the trading cards.

‘We’re going oh my God please wind stay to your left’: Florida brush fires contained

By Angela Rozier

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Florida (WPBF) — Dry and windy conditions are fueling brush fires across the Treasure Coast, prompting St. Lucie County officials to issue a local state of emergency and a county-wide burn ban.

The latest wildfire burned about 10 acres near the Indian River Estates community in Fort Pierce, next to the Savannas Preserve State Park. The fire is contained, but crews are watching for hot spots.

Resident Dottie Powell, whose property is butted up against the preserve, said she watched the smoke from her backyard as firefighters worked to stop the flames from spreading. “It started right over there, you see right there, and it was going down,” Powell said.

Powell said the wind had neighbors worried as smoke filled the area.

“And in this opening here you could see all the smoke, and we’re going, oh my God, please wind stay to your left,” Powell said.

Firefighters with the Florida Forest Service, St. Lucie County Fire District and Department of Environmental Protection returned Thursday to put out hot spots.

St. Lucie County Fire District Chief of Operations Daniel Mikels said the region is experiencing extreme drought conditions.

“So, our drought index right now is well over 600,” Mikels said. We start getting alarms when that drought index is over four. So, we’re well past that 400 number.”

Your neighborhood: Local coverage from WPBF 25 News

The fire district also shared video of crews responding to another brush fire off South Header Canal Road Wednesday. Officials said the dry conditions are contributing to an unusually dangerous wildfire season.

“Because it’s so dry because of the recent cold snaps in my 20-plus career here, this is probably one of the worst times, the worst wildfire droughts that we’re seeing,” Mikels said.

He said homeowners near wooded areas should take steps now to protect their property.

“For people that are living close to these urban interface areas, having a defensible space around their house, clearing out their gutters, making sure they don’t have anything on the roof or hanging on the roof,” Mikels said. “Because with this wind and dispersion, it’ll carry embers down, and that’s how you can have some of these spot fires.”

Powell is hoping for relief soon.

“I think this weekend we’re supposed to get some rain.

‘First of its kind’: Massive illegal casino gambling ring dismantled in Central Florida, Uthmeier says

By Allison Petro

TITUSVILLE, Florida (WESH) — Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the takedown of an illegal casino gambling ring operating throughout Central Florida.

Uthmeier said the counties involved were Volusia, Brevard, Flagler and Duval.

Authorities seized 525 gaming machines and nearly $200,000 in cash. Uthmeier said the number is likely to continue rising as the investigation progresses.

He said this practice continues to happen because current penalties are too low, with offenders often facing only misdemeanor charges.

Uthmeier said the gambling operation not only sucks revenue from the state’s economy, but also facilitates more serious crimes.

Some of these crimes include human trafficking, money laundering and even drug smuggling.

Uthmeier said he’s been calling on the legislature to increase the penalties for illegal gambling, advocating for felony charges against those involved in these activities.

On Jan. 9, Senate Bill 1580 was filed. This bill would increase the penalty for those who operate an illegal gambling house.
