Mescalero woman accused of strangulation, suffocation
(KVIA) — A Mescalero woman has been charged with assault by strangulation and suffocation after allegedly choking someone, causing serious injuries, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of New Mexico said Friday.
In March, 41-year-old Julianna Venego allegedly strangled the victim during an incident at her home, USAO said. Authorities said that during an argument, Venego hit the victim, wrapped a cord around the victim’s neck and prevented the victim from leaving.
USAO said the victim had restricted breathing, dizziness and fear of losing consciousness.
The victim was able to leave and reported the alleged assault to law enforcement. The victim went to a local hospital, but later went to a trauma center for specialized treatment, documents said.
Medical records showed the victim suffered injuries from strangulation, neck trauma, bruising and other injuries.
Venego will remain in custody pending trial. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
