El Paso County Clerk says ‘zero discussion’ of ICE at polls, adding it’s ‘against federal law’
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) – The El Paso County Clerk said voters should not be worried about ICE or other Federal Agents showing up at polling locations on Tuesday.
“It is also against federal law for any federal authorities to come and impede or basically intimidate any voter,” said El Paso County Clerk Steve Schleiker.
Schleiker said El Paso County carries an extra layer of insulation against illegal action from federal agents because of the county’s strong ties to federal agencies.
“One thing that makes El Paso County probably the most unique county in not only the state but in the entire nation is we have five major military installations, and our partnership with our federal friends and neighbors has to be very important,” Schleiker said.
“There has been zero discussions of any ICE agents or authorities coming here to El Paso County.”
However, Schleiker and his office are taking steps to combat a different threat that could cause election interference without any physical presence at the polls.
“There is a lot of misinformation out there in regards to the elections and one thing that we’re dealing with today that we did not deal with during the presidential election is AI, Schleiker said.
Schleiker solicited help from the Regional Office of Emergency Management to help with the security of the midterm election. He said the office will help combat the misinformation by partnering with local media to inform the public in real time about fake and malicious election-tampering AI content.
