VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida (WESH) — A man who fled from deputies was taken into custody Wednesday night near the entrance of the Canaveral National Seashore, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
WESH 2 was at the scene as the man, identified as 37-year-old Bradford Kanan, was wheeled on a stretcher and into the back of an awaiting ambulance on Turtlemound Road.
WESH 2 received reports from viewers who said they saw multiple patrol vehicles speeding down S. Atlantic Avenue to get to the scene. VSO’s helicopter, Air One, also flew over the area.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded around 6 p.m. to a suspicious person call about an unknown subject inside 6965 S. Atlantic Ave.
Arriving deputies encountered Kanan, who allegedly refused to leave his vehicle and then drove away, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Kanan would end up in the area of the Canaveral National Seashore boat ramp, where he bailed out of the vehicle and hid, the statement reads.
“Patrol deputies, K-9, drone units and Air One responded to search for him, ultimately finding him (K-9 apprehension) just before 9 p.m. He was combative and fought the K-9,” the sheriff’s office said.
Kanan allegedly claimed that he had a weapon and threatened to shoot deputies, but no weapon had been recovered by the time of this writing, according to the statement. He faces charges of aggravated assault, battery on a K-9, fleeing and resisting, in addition to a warrant for domestic violence, the sheriff’s office said, adding he was taken to a hospital for evaluation before transport to jail.
Shortly after Kanan was taken into custody and placed in the back of an ambulance, a tow truck removed a white pickup truck from the scene. A man told WESH 2 off-camera that he saw the truck speeding into the park.
A deputy on scene confirmed no law enforcement officers were injured.
