Colorado Sprinfs closes 2026 paving season with more results than expected, even more planned for next year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — As the 11th year of the 2C expanded street repaving program ends, city leaders said that crews resurfaced 17% more lane miles than expected, and expect to exceed that percentage next year.
“We were able to repave 147 lane miles last year and plan to do 43 more this year,” said Byan Wilson, the city’s public works operations manager.
City officials held an event on Wednesday morning to close the 2026 paving season and look ahead to next year.
They gathered at the intersection of Cragmor Road and Stanton Street, in the Cragmoor neighborhood west of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).
11 of the 18 neighborhood streets repaved this year, were in that neighborhood.
“Not only are we hitting the major arterial roadways,” Wilson explained. “We’re now moving into your neighborhood, as well, and being right in front of your front door.”
Mayor Yemi Mobalade has continued to enphasize the importance and benefits of the 2C program that was envisioned in 2015 by former two-term mayor John Suthers.
Suthers campaigned on a sales tax increase to pay for catching up on years of deferred maintenance that left many streets crumbling and full of potholes.
Suthers won and voters passed the 2C initiative, which they’ve extended twice.
The program still has its critics, however, from residents who believe that 2C hasn’t paved enough streets, and isn’t doing so quickly enough.
But Wayne Williams, the mayor’s chief of staff, said that 2C is doing exactly what city officials promised.
