Our Lady of Guadalupe pilgrimage canceled for second year as immigration enforcement concerns remain
COACHELLA, Calif. (KESQ) – For the second year in a row, the Our Lady of Guadalupe pilgrimage will be canceled as concerns over immigration enforcement continue.
Pastors at Catholic churches in Mecca and North Shore confirmed the pilgrimage’s cancelation on Friday to Telemundo 15’s Juan Montesló.
The annual pilgrimage typically draws more than 10,000 faithful walkers on a 32-mile, 13+ hour, spiritual journey from Palm Springs to Coachella on Dec. 12, which is celebrated as the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The pilgrimage was canceled last year in September due to those same immigration enforcement concerns. Local churches hosted smaller celebrations and processions instead of the traditional walk.
It remains unclear whether churches will hold similar smaller celebrations this year.
