GREENFIELD, California (KSBW) — A 13-year-old Greenfield resident died after an electric scooter crash near Elm and Fourth streets at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, the Greenfield police and fire departments said.

The rider crashed into a metal fence and suffered internal injuries, per police.

They were taken to a local trauma center, where they later died, according to the department. Investigators determined no other vehicles were involved.

In May, a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured in a separate Greenfield crash when his e-bike collided with a vehicle on Thorp Avenue. At the time, police said he was expected to survive.

Greenfield police said they have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to reckless e-bike and scooter riding after receiving numerous complaints and safety concerns.

Police say they initially issued warnings but have now adopted a zero-tolerance policy due to the dangers posed by unsafe riding practices.

Police reminded riders that scooters are not allowed on sidewalks and should be ridden in bike lanes.

California law requires motorized scooter riders to be at least 16 and have a valid driver’s license or instruction permit. Helmets are required.
