GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Florida (WBBH) — A bear wandered onto a Golden Gate Estates patio, opened the fridge, and stole an alcoholic drink off the counter.
“I turned around and saw the refrigerator was open, and I yelled at my husband, ‘You know, can you check the cameras?'” said Celine Emerson.
That’s when Emerson got a look at her unexpected intruder. She caught a bear on camera making itself right at home.
“It was just crazy. It was so unusual to see it so close to us,” said Emerson.
It happened over the weekend on her patio in Golden Gate Estates. When Emerson woke up Sunday morning, she discovered the bear had left a massive paw print on her counter.
“It was a little scary seeing him out here. Then when he stood up, he looked pretty tall, like six feet,” said Emerson.
Forget the picnic basket, this Yogi Bear went straight for the fridge and swiped an alcoholic Sun Cruiser.
“It ate the trash in the front yard for 30 minutes. I figured he was thirsty,” said Emerson.
The bear also rummaged through the trash in the front yard, helping itself to an easy meal. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says bears eat more in the fall to build fat reserves for the winter, which can lead to more encounters with people. It’s a good reminder to make sure your trash is secure, and your doors are locked.
“Maybe closing the gate? We don’t close it when we leave. Some go at nighttime. So maybe as our granddaughter gets older, obviously, you know, we’re going to be a little more cautious with things like that,” said Emerson.
