PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) — Local children with disabilities will receive bikes fitted to their individual needs Sunday through Variety Children’s Charity of the Desert’s Freedom Program.

The adaptive bike presentation takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. at the nonprofit’s Palm Desert Resource Center, 42600 Cook Street, Suite 150.

For children who cannot use a standard bicycle, adaptive bikes offer another way to ride alongside siblings and friends.

Each bike is fitted to the child’s physical needs. Features can include supportive seats, harnesses, hand and foot straps, hand-crank pedals and a stable three-wheel frame. Some also have a rear handle so a parent or caregiver can help steer.

According to Variety, the bikes can help children build strength and coordination while giving them more independence and opportunities to take part in activities with others.
