YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma is set to open their new barracks as part of its 2030 Barracks Initiative.

The original barracks was built in the 1970s. Fast forward, MCAS Yuma has provided a much needed upgrade.

The station held a ribbon cutting at the end of September to mark the final milestone towards completion.

In addition, the $90 million was to show respect for the Marines’ service with a new facility.

“Following the commandant’s Barracks Initiative 2030, that’s when we really started prioritizing a lot of the barracks construction. Not just here, but on other bases and stations,” Col. Robert Monroe said.

The barracks include new housing for Marines featuring 164 two-person rooms with a shared bathroom, and the quarters have common areas including a lounging area to relax and other amenities to enjoy.

“The Marines, it gives them a chance after a hard day of work. They have a nice safe place to live, great facilities that they can rest and recharge. And then the common areas let them connect, build relationships with each other. And that’s really key for me,” Monroe said.

This project brought the station and the community together.

“This investment ties into what Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently said that it’s the people in hard hats, the Americans, that are actually building things that our service members use,” Monroe said. “Showcasing that teamwork and benefit that they have between the air station and the yuma community. And that’s really what makes us stronger here.”

The new barracks are set to open end of November.
