SHELLEY — The North End Recreation District broke ground today on the first seven fields of the new Rivers Sports Complex in Shelley, a 72-acre park for local athletes and families throughout the area.

The complex will be built on land donated by the City of Shelley. The project has been in the works for three years, since the recreation district was first established.

Recreation District Board President Adam French said the venue is expected to attract athletes and spectators from across the region, spanning from Rexburg down to Pocatello.

“I think it will affect thousands of people because just not just in Shelley but in the, in the region. Right. So I would go anywhere from Rexburg down to Pocatello. There will be tournaments that will be played here, games will be played here, and they’ll be able to use it for all of those things. And so I think it’s going to be a gathering place for a lot of people in southeast Idaho,” French said.

French says that the first seven fields are only the beginning of the overall development. Future project plans include additional baseball fields and indoor basketball courts.

The developers hope to have the initial seven fields completed and ready for use by next spring.
