Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: U.S. stocks finished Friday higher ahead of a busy week for inflation data and corporate earnings. The S&P 500 rose 0.6%, the Dow gained 0.8% and the Nasdaq added 0.6%.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield ended Friday around 5.24%, keeping borrowing costs in focus. Oil prices also edged higher, with U.S. crude and Brent each settling up about 0.4%.
Today’s Focus: U.S. stock markets are open for a regular session today, while the bond market is closed for the Columbus Day holiday.
September consumer prices arrive Wednesday, followed by producer prices and retail sales Thursday. The reports will help shape expectations for the Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 meeting, after the central bank raised interest rates last month.
Major banks begin reporting third-quarter earnings Tuesday, offering a closer look at consumer spending, lending and how higher borrowing costs are affecting the economy.
Energy policy also remains in focus after President Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine supported a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure but was awaiting details from Washington. He also reported that Russian attacks on energy facilities had continued. Trump’s announcement came two days after he announced a diesel supply deal with Russia.
