LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WLKY) — A big change was announced for this year’s general election in Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Clerk David Yates said this election will have a central voting center where anyone in the county can vote.

And for the first time ever, there will be drive-thru voting.

Yates says this will make it easier for many to cast their votes.

“So for all the able-bodied and unable-bodied people who maybe had trouble getting into the polls during the primary—I watched a lot of people have issues getting into the polling location—we’re going to have access so that they can literally drive through and make voting more accessible to them,” Yates said.

The center will be at the fairgrounds and it’ll only be open on Election Day, Nov. 3.

Yates said state law requires voting to happen indoors, so the drive-thru will be inside.

As for exactly how it will look and work, those details are still being ironed out. We’re told more details will be available this week.

The Expo Center was utilized as a central, and only in-person, voting site in 2020 during COVID.

Yates said he hopes the voting center will help people who have trouble with their assigned polling place. But as a reminder, all regular polling places will also remain open. The voting center is just an alternative.

And it’s not just drive-thru. People will be able to park and go inside as well.

Overall, Yates hopes the new option will making voting more convenient and accessible, and increase turnout.
