Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes talks reelection during Yuma visit
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) is seeking reelection this November.
Secretary Fontes said his top priority for a second term would be getting his office “back to zero.” He said the office has been underfunded for years and needs the resources to do its job.
Fontes said additional funding would help with areas, including IT security, business services, and the state library and archives.
When it comes to elections, Fontes said Arizona’s election system is in a “maintain and improve” phase.
He said election officials across the state, including Republicans and Democrats, are doing their jobs and that Arizona elections are not in a crisis.
Fontes also spoke about the importance of voting and said people should understand the role their voices play in government.
Fontes is originally from Nogales and previously served in the Marine Corps in Yuma.
He said his experience in Yuma helped him understand what it means to be an Arizonan living outside the Phoenix metro area.
He said he wants to see more attention paid to the opportunities and positives border communities bring to Arizona.
The general election is November 3, with early voting beginning October 7.
