Imperial County D.A. addresses recent school threats

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) – In Imperial County, up to four school threats were reported in the month of September.

According to District Attorney George Marquez, authorities worked to address these threat cases.

However, because some of the suspects are minors, certain offenses are considered misdemeanors under current California law, meaning if the person has completed the required service, the charges could be dropped.

Marquez said the top priority for law enforcement agencies is to eliminate any threat to students.

“We would like the, the laws to be stronger. So for, for example, a school threat case, typically it’s what we call Penal Code 422.3, which is a misdemeanor, and it mandates that we give the juvenile six month program,” Marquez explained.

He also added it’s important to address young people’s mental health, as in many of these cases, they were victims of bullying that led to resentment.
