MILWAUKEE (WISN) — Milwaukee police say someone vandalized the stoplights at a Milwaukee intersection before a car slammed into a school bus.
The crash happened at 35th and Center, before 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said a car and bus both traveled through the intersection and the car crashed into the bus, sending the bus crashing into a squad car parked at the intersection with its lights on.
Police said the two officers inside the squad car went to the hospital to be checked out for possible injuries. The driver of the first car also went to the hospital, along with a passenger in the bus. Police described their injuries as minor.
Shanda Booker stopped by the intersection Tuesday afternoon, still wearing a hospital gown after being released. Booker said she was on the bus hours earlier when the crash happened.
“I’m going home right now. I just got released,” Booker said. “I have a small concussion and bruises and pain. A lot of pain.”
Booker said the bus had been shuttling other bus drivers, including Booker, to their respective buses for the day.
“We was on our way to work. The lights was completely out. It was completely dark over here,” Booker said.
Department of Public Works officials said a vandal cut the wires of the traffic lights. It has happened twice in recent weeks.
Booker said the impact of the crash sent her flying.
“What’s going through your mind when you’re being thrown in the bus?” WISN 12 News reporter Kendall Keys asked Booker.
“What the hell is going on? What’s happening? Because I didn’t even really see. I think I held my head down and lifted back up, and I just heard one of the passengers just scream out the driver’s name, and then that’s when that collision hit,” Booker said.
WISN crews observed DPW crews working at the intersection throughout Tuesday, repairing the traffic lights.
Milwaukee police said they are investigating the stoplight vandalism. Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or P3 Tips App.
