NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida (WESH) — Officials rescued a 72-year-old man from a New Smyrna Beach marina after he fell from his wheelchair into the water Sunday night, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 8:55 p.m. to the marina in the 2700 block of North Peninsula Avenue after a caller reported hearing a splash and a man yelling for help.

The area was behind a locked gate, but Sgt. Leven was the first deputy to arrive and found the man clinging to a pipe to keep his head above water.

Leven entered the marina with a buoy and helped the man stay afloat, the sheriff’s office said.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Rescue evaluated the man at the scene. He declined further medical attention, officials said.
