AWC hosts Legislative Town Hall
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Arizona Western College (AWC) is hosting a Town Hall featuring Yuma County’s state elected officials Tuesday afternoon.
The Town Hall took place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Schoening Conference Center at AWC’s Yuma Campus.
While State Sen. Brian Fernandez (D-District 23) participated in the Town Hall virtually, AWC named the following politicians participating in the Town Hall in-person:
State Sen. Tim Dunn (R-District 25) State Rep. Michael Carbone (R-District 25) State Rep. Michele Peña (R-District 23) State Rep. Mariana Sandoval (D-District 23)
One topic that got brought up during the Town Hall was artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers.
State Rep. Sandoval said state lawmakers will continue to work with each other and come up with the best solution.
“I do have a bill that it’s making sure these data centers are coming on in a responsible way…AI is moving faster than we can legislate it. So we need to make sure that we’re legislative so that it’s ethical and so that doesn’t take over our jobs,” Sandoval said.
Students and community members were in attendance to listen and also asked questions, giving their thoughts on issues that matter most to them.
State Sen. Dunn said attending the Town Hall is an example of how residents can reshape the community.
“I always like this town hall because it brings together diverse aspects of Yuma. We’ve got agriculture, education, military officials, so we can really listen to their questions about what legislative priorities they have and what we’re doing to help address those in a bipartisan way,” Dunn said.
