Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: U.S. stocks fell again Tuesday as rising oil prices and Treasury yields added to inflation concerns ahead of the Federal Reserve’s decision. The Dow fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 lost 0.5% and the Nasdaq dropped 0.8%.

The 10-year Treasury yield briefly climbed above 5%, its highest level since 2007. Oil also jumped, with U.S. crude rising 4.4% and Brent gaining 2.9% as Saudi Arabia reportedly canceled some shipments while its East-West pipeline, a key route for bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, remains shut after drone attacks.

Today’s Focus: The Federal Reserve releases its interest-rate decision and updated economic projections at 2 p.m. ET, followed by Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference at 2:30 p.m.

Markets are pricing in roughly a 90% to 95% chance of a quarter-point rate increase, which would be the Fed’s first hike in more than three years. Investors will also be watching the new rate projections for clues about whether additional hikes could follow.

Before the Fed, investors will get August retail sales at 8:30 a.m. ET, an important read on consumer spending as higher energy costs and borrowing rates put new pressure on households.
