Fed Meeting Ahead, Inflation at 3.4%, Oil Climbs

Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: U.S. stocks rebounded Friday after four straight sessions of losses. The Dow and Nasdaq each gained about 1.0%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.9%. All three indexes still finished lower for the week.
Consumer prices rose 0.4% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier, both matching expectations. Core prices, which exclude food and energy, rose 0.3% for the month, slightly more than expected. The report increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this week.
Today’s Focus: The Federal Reserve begins its two-day policy meeting Tuesday, with an interest-rate decision due Wednesday. Markets are pricing in nearly a 90% chance of a quarter-point increase, which would be the Fed’s first hike since July 2023.
U.S. stock futures pointed lower Monday, led by technology shares. Nasdaq futures were down about 1.6% early Monday, while S&P 500 futures fell about 0.7%.
Oil prices are also climbing again after new attacks on Middle East energy infrastructure. Brent crude traded near $107 a barrel after a drone attack temporarily shut Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, a key route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.
There are no major U.S. economic releases scheduled Monday. Later this week, investors will get retail sales, housing data and industrial production alongside the Fed decision.
