UCSB beats Grand Canyon behind long-range goal by Bjornsson and late save from Beninga

PHOENIX, Arizona (KEYT) – The ‘Killer B’s’ of Bjornsson and Beninga stung Grand Canyon as UCSB defeated the Lopes 2-1.

Gauchos midfielder Steinar Bjornsson blasted a rocket past the Lopes keeper in the 72nd minute to snap a 1-1 tie for what proved to be the game-winning goal as UCSB finished up 2-1 on the road trip.

The Gauchos hung for the win on a point-blank save from keeper Owen Beninga in the final minute as UCSB improves to 3-1-2 on the season.

Kyle Standish scored in the 51st minute for the Gauchos first goal. Standish and Bjornsson share the team lead with 3 goals on the season.

UCSB hosts San Diego State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
