Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: U.S. stocks fell for a third straight session Wednesday as oil prices climbed above $100 a barrel and Treasury yields moved higher.

The Dow fell 0.8%, the S&P 500 declined 0.5% and the Nasdaq dropped 0.6%. Brent crude settled above $100 a barrel for the first time since July as the U.S.-Iran conflict continued to disrupt oil flows through the Middle East. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 4.84%, reaching its highest level since November 2023.

Treasury announced it would buy back up to $6 billion of government securities in the 10- to 20-year maturity range Thursday, triple the previous maximum. Treasury yields rose following the announcement, as some investors had expected a larger operation.

Today’s Focus: The August Producer Price Index and weekly jobless claims are due at 8:30 a.m. ET Thursday, providing new readings on both inflation and the labor market ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting next week.

PPI measures changes in the prices received by producers, offering a look at inflation earlier in the supply chain. Friday’s Consumer Price Index measures changes in the prices consumers pay for goods and services. Weekly jobless claims, meanwhile, track the number of people newly applying for unemployment benefits and provide a more frequent look at layoffs and labor-market conditions.

Oracle and Adobe report earnings after the closing bell Thursday. Investors will be watching both companies for updates on demand for their AI and cloud products.
