Coachella City Council considers anti-nepotism policy for city commissions
COACHELLA, Calif. (KESQ) — Coachella City Council members are considering a new policy that would limit their ability to appoint family members to city commissions and committees.
The proposal is up for a vote during Wednesday night’s City Council meeting.
If approved, council members would not be allowed to appoint family members to serve on city commissions or committees. The policy would also prevent one councilmember from nominating or appointing a relative of another councilmember.
The proposed rules would cover more than immediate family. They include relatives such as aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins and grandparents.
The policy would also apply to people who are not related but live in the same household as an elected official.
Councilmember Elena Delgado is leading the effort.
The proposal follows recent discussions on social media about family connections in Coachella politics.
California has conflict-of-interest laws that apply to public officials, but those laws do not automatically prevent every type of relative from seeking or holding public office.
