‘Absolutely thrilled’: Recovery programs go head-to-head in community softball game

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KOAT) — More than 50 softball players from two Albuquerque recovery programs took the field at Grant Middle School on Saturday to launch a Recovery Softball League.
“It was an amazing opportunity for individuals who are in recovery to work their way back into community events and show that they can do that in a 100 percent sober way,” Angela Lucero, Executive Director of the Vibe Treatment Center, told KOAT 7 on Sunday.
“They were absolutely thrilled,” said Daniel Morris, an administrative assistant with Perfectly Imperfect NM and the founder of the league.
“Joining leagues like this is exactly what the doctor ordered,” said Daniel, touting community activities like the softball league for helping individuals overcome addiction and deal with mental illness.
“This is exactly the support they need,” Morris said. His goal now is to seek city funding to support the expansion of the league in Albuquerque and in surrounding counties.
Director of Health, Housing & Homelessness Gilbert RamÃrez also addressed the game and expressed pride in the event.
