What Trump’s new vaccine order means for kids back to school
THOUSAND PALMS, CALIF. (KESQ)- President Trump signed an executive order calling for changes to the federal childhood vaccine schedule.
With kids heading back to school, some parents may be wondering what the changes mean for their children.
None of the recommendations or mandates in California have changed with any of these changes. We’re following the Western Health Alliance, and CDP. So there’s no real changes in California.
Lindsey Valenzuela, a Clinical Pharmacist and VP of Population Health Integration at Desert Oasis Healthcare says “in the Valley, we have historically had lower pediatric vaccination rates. We have a lower primary care physician to patient ratio. So it is more difficult for parents to get in and see a pediatrician at times when they need it.”
As kids return to the classroom, they are also returning to close contact. “They are very close proximity. They’re touching the same toys, the same tools in class. And so you have a lot of opportunity for infection to pass very quickly,” said Valenzuela.
“We have multigenerational homes in the Coachella Valley. So if a child gets sick and they live with a grandparent, what are the chances of the grandparent getting sick much higher,” says Velenzuela.
