Heavy Hearts In Guadalupe as Curtains Close on Royal Theatre’s Restoration Project
GUADALUPE, Calif. (KEYT) – City officials in Guadalupe had to call a rather abrupt halt to the restoration project at the Royal Theatre.
The historic site may need to finish some labor before the operation is fully shut down.
Community members watched with lifting hearts in early December as ProCon Inudstries broke ground at the historic site of Guadalupe’s Royal Theatre.
Construction work was moving at full speed until last Tuesday, when the city council abruptly brought the project to a full closure, with admittedly heavy hearts.
Officials say as labor progressed, crews were encountering more and more issues that required additional expense to fix.
As those various stumbling blocks built up, so did the projected financial red flags, and city leaders say that build-up did seem rapid.
City leaders say there will still be crews out here for a time, as the site must be made safe and preserved as is before a full shut-down can occur.
Meetings are scheduled in the next few days to determine how to preserve what has been built so far and seal it from access.
City administrator David Trujillo says the shutdown implies an undetermined period of pause while the city meets other fiscal obligations.
Trujillo says the future of the site is undetermined, but that there may be legislative reasons for keeping it as a performing arts venue in some form.
