Body camera video of Albuquerque newborn found in dumpster

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KOAT) — Albuquerque Police body camera footage reveals the aftermath of a newborn found in a dumpster in Northwest Albuquerque on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. KOAT obtained the footage in July 2026. According to APD, the deceased newborn was found wrapped inside of a blanket.
“Some homeless individuals discovered the baby. It looked like it was an actual baby, partially wrapped in a blanket inside the dumpster,” APD Communications Director Gilbert Gallegos said in April 2025.

Man: “Yeah.”
APD Officer: “How did you find the baby?”
Man: “I was just looking in the dumpster and I saw a shirt like this.”
APD located the 31-year-old mother of the newborn. According to APD, its Crimes Against Children Unit received a tip that resulted in a DNA warrant. On Sunday, April 27, 2025, she was detained for questioning then released. Detectives determined the mother was homeless. According to APD, she told investigators the infant was stillborn. It’s still unclear if the mother faced charges.
What is a Safe Haven Site? “A safe haven site is a designated public location—such as a hospital, fire station, or police station where a parent can safely and anonymously surrender a newborn infant without fear of criminal prosecution for abandonment.”
